Aus Sanct Justi Klosterhallen tönt ein träges Totenlied, Glocken summen von den Türmen für den Mönch, der heut' verschied. Seht den Toten! Wie von welkem Blute schlingt ein roter Reif sich um sein Haupt; ob einst drauf zur Buß ein Dornkranz ruhte! Nein, die Krone lag auf diesem Haupt! Die Kapuze zieht ein Mönch ihm tief jetzt übers Auge zu, daß die böse Spur der Krone tief darin verborgen ruh'. Einst das Scepter hielt sein Armerhoben, rüttelte gleich dran die halbe Welt; er hielt fest und fester es nach oben, wie ein Fels, der eine Tanne hält. Diese Arme beugt dem Toten jetzt ein Frater zu Sanct Just, drückt ein Kreuz darein und beugt sie, ach so leicht! verschränkt zur Brust. Wie des Regenbogens Himmelsstiege glomm der Tag, der ihm das Licht beschied, Kön'ge schaukelten da seine Wiege, Königinnen sangen ihm das Lied. Doch ein Mönchchor singt das Grablied jetzt in alter Melodei, wie er singt, ob Grabeslegung oder Auferstehung sei. Seht, die Sonne sinkt, die aus den Reichen dieses Toten nie den Ausgang fand; dieses Abendrot im Gau der Eichen ist ein Morgenrot dem Palmenland. Und die Mönche heiser singen: Schnöde Welt, o fahre wohl! Und die Glocken leiser klingen: Schöne Täler, lebet wohl! Einmal noch durchs Kirchenfenster nieder blickt zum Sarg der Sonne mildes Rot, was sie hier sieht, dort zu künden wieder: wie der Herrscher beider Welten tot! Hirt und Hirtin doch im Tale, wie da Glocke klingt und Lied, beten still, entblößten Hauptes, für den frommen Mönch, der schied.

Dal chiostro di San Giusto risuona un lento canto di morte, le campane suonano dalle torri per il monaco, che oggi è morto. Vedete il morto! Come di sangue secco un alone rosso circonda il suo capo; come se avesse portato per penitenza una corona di spine! No, altra corona posò su questo capo! Un monaco gli abbassa il cappuccio fino sugli occhi, in modo che il segno malvagio della corona rimanga nascosto. Una volta lo scettro fu innalzato dal suo braccio, e con quello scuoteva mezzo mondo; lo teneva sempre più stretto in alto, come un albero piantato in una roccia. Queste braccia piega al morto ora un frate di San Giusto, gli mette una croce fra le mani e le incrocia - ah, così leggere! - strette al petto. Come la scala celeste dell'arcobaleno splendeva il giorno che lui venne alla luce, quando sovrani dondolavano la sua culla e regine gli cantavano la ninnananna. Un coro di monaci gli canta la nenia funebre ora, un'antica melodia, un canto che non si sa se di sepoltura o di risurrezione. Vedete, cala il sole, che dal regno di questo morto non andava mai via; questo tramonto nel paese delle querce è aurora nel regno delle palme. E i monaci cantano rochi: mondo vile, addio! E le campane suonano piano: belle valli, addio! Ancora una volta dalle finestre della chiesa guarda alla bara il dolce rosso del sole, per annunciare là ciò che qui vede: Il sovrano dei due mondi è morto! Il pastore e la pastora nella valle, sentendo la campana e il canto, pregano in silenzio, col capo chino, per il pio monaco che è morto.
