Aus dem dunklen Meere wächst der Mond herauf, in einem fernen, entfernten Land blüht er jetzt auch auf. Die Liebe trauert ihren vergeblichen Traum, die Liebe trauert ihren Traum, sie wartet, auf den entfernten Abend. Klarer scheint jetzt der Mond in meinen Kummer. Ich ziehe das Nachtgewand an, kühl ist der Reif. Hände, meine Hände, wie leer seid ihr, das alles auszusprechen! - Du Schlaf, gib mir einen Traum, du Schlaf, einen Traum gib mir über die Rückkehr nach Hause, über die Rückkehr heim, heim. Schlaf, den Traum kannst du mir nicht geben -- weil meine Sehnsucht mich ununterbrochen weckt.
