Der das Roß bestiegen,
Um in frischer Jugendzeit
Durch die Welt zu fliegen.

Berge und Auen,
Einsamer Wald,
Mädchen und Frauen
Prächtig im Kleide,
Golden Geschmeide,
Alles erfreut ihn mit schöner Gestalt.

Wunderlich fliehen
Gestalten dahin,
Schwärmerisch glühen
Wünsche in jugendlich trunkenem Sinn.

Ruhm streut ihm Rosen
Schnell in die Bahn,
Lieben und Kosen,
Lorbeer und Rosen
Führen ihn höher und höher hinan.

Rund um ihn Freuden,
Feinde beneiden,
Erliegend, den Held --
Dann wählt er bescheiden
Das Fräulein, das ihm nur vor allen gefällt.

Und Berge und Felder
Und einsame Wälder
Mißt er zurück.
Die Eltern in Tränen,
Ach, alle ihr Sehnen --
Sie alle verreinigt das lieblichste Glück.

Sind Jahre verschwunden,
Erzählt er dem Sohn
In traulichen Stunden,
Und zeigt seine Wunden,
Der Tapferkeit Lohn.
So bleibt das Alter selbst noch jung,
Ein Lichtstrahl in der Dämmerung.

Nessuno ancora si è pentito
di essere montato a cavallo,
nel tempo fresco della giovinezza,
per volare in giro per il mondo.
 
Montagne e prati,
boschi solitari,
Fanciulle e donne
In splendidi abiti
intessuti d'oro,
ogni cosa dà allegria con la sua bellezza.
 
Singolari figure
Si dileguano rapide,
Ardono con entusiasmo
I desideri ebbri di giovinezza
 
La gloria getta a lui rose
Lesta, sul suo cammino,
amori e carezze,
rose e allori,
lo portano sempre più in alto.
 
Intorno a lui gioie,
nemici che invidiano,
vinti, l'eroe. 
Poi sceglie fra tutte
la fanciulla che a lui di più piace.
 
E monti e campi
E boschi solitari
attraversa al ritorno.
I genitori in lacrime,
e tutti i loro sospiri,
li unisce tutti la felicità più bella. 
 
Sono passati gli anni,
ora racconta al figlio
nei momenti più intimi,
e gli mostra le ferite
