Berceuse Créole

Des grandes ombres se forment
Dans le bois des lataniers
Les petits oiseaux s'endorment
Faites comme eux chers ramiers.
On n'entend plus dans les branches
Leur merveilleux gazoullis
Toutes les têtes se penchent
Ils dorment les bengalis.
Les doux zéphyrs les balancent
en agitant les bambous,
Et l'harmonieux silence
Les bercera comme vous!
Reposez si tout sommeille
Dans les bois sur les côteaux.
Notre amour est là qui veille.
Dormez bien petits oiseaux.

Creole Lullaby
Language: English  after the French (Français)
Great shadows form
in the palm groves.
The little birds fall asleep.
Do as they do, dear wood-pigeons!
In the branches one no longer
hears their wondrous chirping.
All heads bend forward.
The waxbills sleep.
The sweet zephyrs support them
as they shake the bamboo,
and a harmonious silence
will rock them, as it will rock you!
Rest, as everything sleeps
in the woods, on the slopes.
Our love is here and keeps vigil.
Sleep well, little birds!
