Bin ich der Wonne mir kaum noch bewußt.

Tiefer Strom der Zeit,
Wandelst bald aus Morgen Heut,

Will es nun auch weiter wagen,

Da die Einz'ge winkt,
Liebe läßt  mich nicht verschmachten,
Bis dies Leben sinkt!

Himmel bleibt mir immer heiter,

il peso della gioia e del piacere?
Come evitare che l'anima mi abbandoni
Sotto i colpi pesanti del cuore?
 
E se adesso svanissero
Le ore dell'amore,
chi mai avrebbe voglia,
in un deserto triste
di trascinare ancora una vita di gioie priva,
senza più un fiore che sbocci sulla riva?
 
Come avanza con piedi di piombo
Passo su passo, lentamente, il tempo!
Ma quando dovrò prendere congedo,
come una piuma volerà leggero!
 
Batti, batti ardente potere,
nel profondo del petto fedele!
Come suono di liuto che svanisce,
così di vita la gioia suprema finisce.
Ah, troppo presto è passata,
quando ancora la avevo appena provata.
 
Mormora, mormora ancora e sempre,
tu del tempo profonda corrente,
rapido il domani in oggi trasformi,
di luogo in luogo rapida corri;
fino a qui mi hai trasportato,
lieta per poco, poi con suono muto,
ma ora ancora voglio cimentarmi
con ciò che il futuro vorrà riservarmi.

perché lei, l'unica, un cenno mi ha dato,
