Der Rose Bitte
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Trenn mich nicht vom Blätterthrone,
Gib mich nicht dem Tode hin.
Nicht umsonst ward ich die Krone
Und der Blumen Königin.
Laß mein Dasein sich vollenden,
Das nur allzu schnell entweicht,
Laß mich prangen, Düfte spenden,
Bis mein Haupt sich welkend neigt.
Wenn mich hohe Reize schmücken,
Darf die Hand sich frevelnd nah'n?
So nur kann ich dich entzücken,
Freudig wandeln dir voran.
Ach, mein Ruhm wird bald verhallen,
Endlich löst der Zauber sich,
Meine Blätter welken, fallen,
Und vergebens suchst du mich!

The rose's plea
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Do not detach me from my leafy throne,
Do not give me over to death.
Not in vain did I become the crown
And the queen of all flowers.
Let my existence complete itself,
[My existence] that only too quickly flees,
Let me stand in scented splendor,
Until my head is bowed by wilting.
Should a hand dare to approach
One who is crowned with such great beauty?
Only thus may I enrapture you,
Happily pass before you.
Ah, my glory will soon fade,
Finally the magic will dissolve,
My petals will wilt and fall,
And you shall seek me in vain!
