The myrtle
Language: English
Available translation(s): GER
Its clinging, mournful leaves, I said,
Seem made to thatch a grave;
Around the roots of cypress trees,
Too deep in gloom for sun or breeze,
It lives to mourn the dead!
But when I kissed her name, I saw,
Above the dear, dead maid,
A starry flower of tender blue,
A bit of heaven, shining through
The leaves upon her grave!

Die Myrte
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the English
Ihre anliegenden, gramvollen Bläter, sagte ich,
sind wie geschaffen ein Grab zu bedecken;
Bei den Wurzeln der Zypressen,
tief im Schatten von Wind oder Sonne,
lebt es allein die Toten zu beklagen!
Als ich ihren Namenszug küsste, sah ich,
über dem lieben, lieben Mädchen,
Blütensterne in zartestem Blau,
ein Abbild des Himmels auf
dem Blättermantel ihres Grabes
