Wo die wilden Bäche rauschen 
Und die hohen Palmen stehn,
Wenn die Jäger heimlich lauschen,
Viele Rehe einsam gehn.
Bin ein Reh, flieg' durch die Trümmer,
Über die Höh',
Wo im Schnee
Still die letzten Gipfel schimmern,
Folg' mir nicht, erjagst mich nimmer!

Bin ein Vöglein in den Lüften,
Schwing' mich übers blaue Meer,
Durch die Wolken von den Klüften
Fliegt kein Pfeil mehr bis hieher.
Und die Au'n, die Felsenbogen,
Waldeseinsamkeit 
Weit, wie weit, 
Sind versunken in die Wogen --

Je suis un feu clair, qui flamboie
Depuis la verte couronne des rochers,
Le vent du lac est mon amant et m'invite
À une joyeuse danse tourbillonnante,

Il vient et change, inconstant,
Monte violemment, tombe doucement,
Je tourne mes sveltes flammes :
Ne viens pas près de moi : je te brûlerais !

Là où les ruisseaux turbulents grondent,
Et où sont les hauts palmiers,
Alors que les chasseurs écoutent en secret,
Passent de nombreux chevreuils solitaires.

Je suis un chevreuil,je vole dans les éboulis,
En‑haut sur les hauteurs, où dans la neige
Dans le silence brillent les derniers sommets,
Ne me suis pas, ne me pourchasse jamais !

Je suis un oiseau dans les airs,
Je me balance au-dessus de la mer d'azur,
Au milieu des nuages, venant des abîmes,
Aucune flèche ne vole plus jusqu'ici.

Et les champs, les courbes des rochers
La grande solitude de la forêt,
Si grande, sombrent dans les vagues,
Ah, je me suis évaporée !
