Träumerisch der Mond drauf scheinet,
Dem die Stadt gar wohl gefällt,
Als läg' zauberhaft versteinet
Drunten eine Märchenwelt.
Ringsher durch das tiefe Lauschen,
Über alle Häuser weit,
Nur des Meeres fernes Rauschen.
Wunderbare Einsamkeit!
Und der Türmer wie vor Jahren
singet ein uraltes Lied:
Wolle Gott den Schiffer wahren,
Der bei Nacht vorüberzieht.

Se tiennent silencieuses devant les portes.
La haut la lune rêveuse éclaire
La ville qui lui plaît tant
Alors qu'en dessous, magique et pétrifié
S'étend un monde de conte de fées.
Autour, au milieu de profondes torpeurs,
Loin, au large de toutes les maisons,
Seul le bruit lointain de la mer.
Solitude merveilleuse !
Et le veilleur, comme depuis des années
Entame une chanson immémoriale :
Que dieu protège le marin
Qui passe dans la nuit.
