You can help us modernize! The present website has been online for a very long time and we want to bring it up to date. As of April 20, we are $4,600 away from our goal of $15,000 to fund the project. The fully redesigned site will be better for mobile, easier to read and navigate, and ready for the next decade. Please give today and join dozens of other supporters in making this important renovation possible!

Hertig Magnus

Language: Swedish (Svenska)

Hertig Magnus från sitt fönster
drömmande ser Vätterns bölja,
månbelyst och sval och klangrik
slottets fasta murar skölja;

tunga kval hans själ förvirrat,
att sin gode far han mistat,
och att blod i strömmar flutit
för hans bröders skull, som tvistat.

Hertig Magnus från sitt fönster
ser i vattnets ljusa dager
liten sjönymf ljufligt vagga,
sjungande och fri och fager

»Hertig Magnus,» så hon sjunger,
»kom till mig från slottet höga,
att ditt ädla sjuka hjärta
i den svala böljan löga,

låt mig kyssa få din tinning,
sköna prins, låt dig beveka,
kasta dig i mina armar,
på gullharpan skall jag leka!»

Hertig Magnus från sitt fönster,
tjusad utaf nymfens fägring,
sprang i vattnet, lät sig föras
af sin undersköna hägring,

bars omkring tills morgon grydde,
af den väna vattenanden,
och blef funnen bland violer,
oskadd, slumrande på stranden.

Herzog Magnus

Language: German (Deutsch) after the Swedish (Svenska)

Herzog Magnus stand am Fenster.
Träumend sah er in die Wogen,
wie am Fuße seines Schlosses
mondbeglänzt da hin sie zogen.

Voll von Kummer, daß den Vater
riß der Tod ihm von der Seite,
und das Blut nun floß in Strömen
im verruchten Brüderstreite.

Herzog Magnus sieht vom Fenster
durch die Flut sich wiegend schwingen
eine wunderschöne Nixe,
und er hört sie lieblich singen:

"Herzog Magnus," laß' dir raten,
"komm' zu mir vom Schloß hernieder,
bade in den klaren Fluten
deine jugendlichen Glieder!

Deine Augen will ich küssen,
holder Fürst, mich an dich schmiegen,
will in meinen weißen Armen
singend dich zur Ruhe wiegen."

Herzog Magnus, wie er lauschet,
wie er schaut und wie er höret,
schwingt hinaus sich aus dem Fenster,
von der Nixe Sang betöret,

weilet, sanft von ihr umfangen,
lange dort im Nixenlande;
unter Blumen, friedlich schlummernd,
fand man morgens ihn am Strande.

Note: from the Sibelius score.
