Das Kind ruht aus vom Spielen

Language: German (Deutsch)

Das Kind ruht aus vom Spielen,
Am Fenster rauscht die Nacht,
Die Engel Gottes im Kühlen
Getreulich halten Wacht.

Am Bettlein still sie stehen,
Der Morgen graut noch kaum,
Sie küssen's, eh sie gehen,
Das Kindlein lacht im Traum.

Angels' vigil

Language: English after the German (Deutsch)

The day at last is ended,
my babe has gone to sleep,
and God's fair Angels, descended
to earth, now vigil keep,

Around its cradle winging,
till grey-eyed morning gleams,
then kiss it, softly singing,
and baby smiles in dreams.

From the Wolff score.
