Weh mir! mich armen, zweifelnden Schmetterling,
Hier unten, tief drunten, Holunder, Jasmin.

Elders and lindens
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Elders and lindens -- sweet scents --, jasmines,
soon, soon will come the time when I have died.
The warm summer wind drips with good fragrances,
I lie far below, unintoxicated and blind.
Or am I a tone on a heavenly lyre?
Am I drinking star-dew? breathing ambrosian air?
Do I rush with eagles' strength through eternities,
scorning earthly bonds, earthly tombs?
Woe is me, poor, doubting butterfly,
confined in the flowery circle of the earth.
Breathe around me, you lindens; throng over me
down here, far below, elders, jasmines.
