El vi ja titil·la en la copa daurada,
però no beveu encara, primer us cantaré una cançó!
La cançó de l'aflicció us ha de ressonar amb rialles
dins l'ànima. Quan la pena s'acosta,
s'assequen els jardins de l'esperit,
es marceixen l'alegria i el cant.
Llòbrega és la vida, obscura és la mort.

Senyor d'aquesta casa!
En el teu celler tresoreja l'abundor del vi daurat!
Aquí, declaro com a meu aquest llaüt!
Tocar el llaüt i buidar els gots,
són les coses que més bé  harmonitzen.
Una copa plena de vi en el just moment
val més que tots els regnes d'aquesta terra!
Llòbrega és la vida, obscura és la mort.

El firmament blaveja eternament, i la terra
romandrà llarg temps impertorbable, florirà cada primavera.
Però tu, ésser humà, quant de temps vius tu?
Ni tan sols cent anys t'és permès de delectar-te
en les caduques banalitats d'aquest món!

el sepulcre que, sorneguer, somriu dins la terra.
