Auf der Donau

Language: German (Deutsch)

Auf der Wellen Spiegel
Schwimmt der Kahn.
Alte Burgen ragen
Himmelan;
Tannenwälder rauschen
[Geistergleich -]1
Und das Herz im Busen
Wird uns weich.

Denn der Menschen Werke
Sinken all';
Wo ist [Thurm und]2 Pforte,
Wo der Wall,
Wo sie selbst, die Starken?
Erzgeschirmt,
Die in Krieg und Jagden
Hingestürmt.

Trauriges Gestrüppe
Wuchert fort,
Während frommer Sage
Kraft verdorrt.
Und im kleinen Kahne
Wird uns bang -
Wellen droh'n, wie Zeiten,
Untergang.

Sur le Danube

Language: French (Français) after the German (Deutsch)

Sur le miroir des vagues
flotte notre bateau,
De vieux châteaux s'élèvent
vers le ciel,
Des forêts de sapins frémissent
comme des fantômes,
Et le cœur dans la poitrine
devient tendre.

Car le travail de l'homme
échoue toujours,
Où est la tour, où est la porte,
où est le mur,
Où sont-elles, ces forteresses
bien protégées,
Qui étaient assiégées dans la guerre
et la chasse ?

Des fourrés tristes
prolifèrent,
Tandis que la force des paroles pieuses
se dessèche :
Et dans le petit bateau, la crainte
nous saisit,
Les vagues, comme le temps,
menacent de mort.
