Des weines geist begann im fass zu singen:
Mensch - teurer ausgestossener - dir soll
Durch meinen engen kerker durch erklingen
Ein lied von licht und bruderliebe voll.

Ich weiss: am sengendheissen bergeshange
Bei schweiss und mühe nur gedeih ich recht
Da meine seele ich nur so empfange
Doch bin ich niemals undankbar und schlecht.

Und dies bereitet mir die grösste labe
Wenn eines arbeit-matten mund mich hält 
Sein heisser schlund wird mir zum kühlen grabe
Das mehr als kalte keller mir gefällt.

Hörst du den sonntagsang aus frohem schwarme?
Nun kehrt die hoffnung prickelnd in mich ein:
Du stülpst die ärmel - stützest beide arme
Du wirst mich preisen und zufrieden sein.

Ich mache deines weibes augen heiter
Und deinem sohne leih ich frische kraft
Ich bin für diesen zarten lebensstreiter
Das öl das fechtern die gewandheit schafft.

Und du erhältst von diesem pflanzenseime
Den Gott - der ewige sämann - niedergiesst
Damit in deiner brust die dichtkunst keime
Die wie ein seltner baum zum himmel spriesst.

Lo spirito del vino nel barile iniziò a cantare:
Uomo - caro esiliato - dovrà per te soltanto,
da questo mio carcere angusto, risuonare
pieno di luce e di amore fraterno, il mio canto.

Io lo so bene: sull'infocato pendio della montagna
con sudore e fatica riesco ad allignare
perché solo così ottengo di avere un'anima
e ingrato o cattivo mai potrò diventare.

E mi è dato provare un gran conforto
se mi beve un'uomo stanco per la sua fatica,
e la sua calda gola è per me come un fresco sepolcro
più dolce e più gradito di una fredda cantina.

Odi il canto di festa delle allegre brigate?
Una vivace speranza in me sento ritornare:
con le braccia sul tavolo e le maniche rimboccate
tu tornerai contento e mi farai onore.

Renderò più lucenti gli occhi alla tua amata
ed a tuo figlio regalerò una forza nuova,
per questo fragile combattente della vita
sarò l'olio che rende più forti alla lotta.

Tu ti sostenterai con questa linfa vegetale
che Dio - seminatore eterno - su di noi versa,
e nel tuo animo la poesia sentirai germogliare
che come un pianta rara verso il cielo si leva.
