Der Abend schleiert Flur und Hain
In traulichholde Dämmrung ein;
Hell flimmt, wo goldne Wölkchen ziehn,
Der Stern der Liebeskönigin.

Die Wogenfluth hallt Schlummerklang,
Die Bäume lispeln Abendsang; 
Der Wiese Gras umgaukelt lind
Mit Sylphenkuß der Frühlingswind. 

Der Geist der Liebe wirkt und strebt,
Wo nur ein Puls der Schöpfung bebt;
Im Strom, wo Wog' in Woge fließt,
Im Hain, wo Blatt an Blatt sich schließt. 

O Geist der Liebe! führe du
Dem Jüngling die Erkorne zu!
Ein Minneblick der Trauten hellt
Mit Himmelsglanz die Erdenwelt!

Geest van liefde

De avond sluiert bos en veld,
En schemer met de nacht versmelt;
Hel glimt, tussen1 gouden wolkjes in,
De ster der liefdeskoningin2.
 
Het golfgeklots geeft sluimerdrang,
De bomen lisp'len avondzang,
Het weidegras wordt zacht omspeeld
Door lentewind die kust en streelt.
 
De geest van liefde werkt en streeft
Waar slechts één scheppingspulsje beeft:
In de3 stroom, waar golf op golf aanglijdt,
In 't bos, waar blad aan blad zich vlijt.
 
O, geest van liefde, breng nu gauw
De knaap zijn uitverkoren vrouw!
Een liefdesblik van 't paartje geeft
Een hemelglans aan al wat leeft!
