Der Jüngling auf dem Hügel

Language: German (Deutsch)

Ein Jüngling auf dem Hügel
Mit seinem Kummer saß,
Wohl ward der Augen Spiegel
Ihm trüb' und tränennaß.

Sah frohe Lämmer spielen
Am grünen Felsenhang,
Sah frohe Bächlein quillen
Das bunte Tal entlang;

Die Schmetterlinge sogen
Am roten Blütenmund,
Wie Morgenträume flogen
Die Wolken in dem Rund;

Und Alles war so munter,
Und Alles schwamm in Glück,
Nur in sein Herz hinunter
Sah nicht der Freude Blick.

Ach, dumpfes Grabgeläute
Im Dorfe nun erklang,
Schon tönte aus der Weite
Ein klagender Gesang;

Sah nun die Lichter [scheinen]1,
Den schwarzen Leichenzug,
Fing bitter an zu [weinen]2,
Weil man sein Röschen trug.

Jetzt ließ den Sarg man nieder,
Der Totengräber kam,
Und gab der Erde wieder,
Was Gott aus selber nahm.

Da schwieg des Jünglings Klage,
Und betend ward sein Blick,
Sah schon am schönem Tage
Des Wiedersehens Glück.

Und wie die Sterne kamen,
Der Mond heraufgeschifft,
[Da las]3 er in den Sternen
Der Hoffnung hohe Schrift.

Le jeune homme sur la colline

Language: French (Français) after the German (Deutsch)

Un jeune homme sur la colline
Était assis avec son chagrin ;
Sans doute l'éclat de ses yeux devint
Sombre et rempli de larmes.

Il regardait les moutons joyeux jouer
Sur la pente verte et rocailleuse,
Il regardait le joyeux ruisseau couler
Le long de la vallée pleine de couleurs ;

Les papillons tétaient
À la bouche rouge des fleurs.
Comme des rêves du matin
Les nuages volaient tout autour.

Et tout était si gai,
Et tout flottait dans le bonheur,
Seulement à l'intérieur de son cœur
L'œil ne voyait aucune joie.

Hélas, la morne cloche de la mort
Sonnait maintenant dans le village,
Déjà au loin retentissait
Un chant de lamentation ;

Maintenant il voyait les lumières briller,
Le noir cortège,
Il commençait à pleurer amèrement,
Parce qu'on portait sa Rosie.

Maintenant ils soulevaient le cercueil,
Les fossoyeurs arrivaient,
Et ils rendaient à la terre
Ce que Dieu lui avait pris.

Alors le jeune homme tut sa plainte,
Et son regard se mit à prier,
Déjà il voyait ce jour charmant
De bonheur de la réunion.

Et comme les étoiles arrivaient,
La lune naviguait dans le ciel,
Il lisait dans les étoiles
Un message suprême d'espoir.
