Die Wildniß glänzt in ungewohnter Helle,

Auf jedes Blatt, in jede Schattenquelle
Malt sich dein Bild.

Gern weil' ich, Grazie, wo du den Hügel
Hinabgeschwebt,
Leicht, wie ein Rosenblatt auf Zephyrs Flügel
Vorüberbebt.

Am [Hüttchen]1 dort bekränzt' ich dir, umflossen
Von Abendgluth,
Mit Immergrün und jungen Blüthensprossen
Den Halmenhut.

Bei jedem [Lichtwurm in den]2 Felsenstücken,
Als ob die Feen
Da Tänze webten, riefst du voll Entzücken:
Wie schön! wie schön!

Wohin ich blick' und geh', erblick' ich immer
Den Wiesenplan,
Wo wir der Berge Schnee mit Purpurschimmer
Beleuchtet sahn.

Ihr schmelzend Mailied weinte Philomele
Im Uferhain;
Da fleht' ich dir, im Blick die ganze Seele:

First published in Musen-Almanach für 1793, herausgegeben von Joh. Heinr. Voß, Hamburg, bey C.E.Bohn, pages 184-185. This first edition has an additional (third) stanza which was left out in later editions:

's Nachts bij het meer, - 't is zoel, de maan straalt verre -,
Denk 'k slechts aan jou!
En aan jouw letters vlechten zich de sterren:
Een grootse schouw.
 
De ruigte straalt in ongewone lichtheid,
Van jou vervuld;
Op ieder blad, in elke schaduwdichtheid
Word jij onthuld.
 
Graag toef ik, dromenvrouw, waar jij de heuvel
Bent afgezweefd,
Licht als een rozenblad op Zefiers1 vleugel
Voorbij mij beeft.
 
In 't hutje daar bekranst' ik jou, omgoten
Met avondgloed,
Met maagdenpalm en jonge bloesemloten
De halmenhoed.
 
Bij elke glimworm in een rotsoase,
- 't Leek een toernooi
Van feeëndansen - riep jij in extase:
Wat mooi, wat mooi!
 
Waar ik ook kijk en ga, komt telkens dagen
Het weitje zoet
Waar wij de eeuw'ge sneeuw beschenen zagen
Met purp'ren gloed.
 
Haar smeltend meilied weende Philomele2
In 't oeverbos,
Daar bad ik jou - mijn ogen spraken delen -:
Laat mij niet los!
