Note provided by Peter Rastl: In Schubert's (and Mayrhofer's, and Goethe's) time there was a distinction between "die Angel" (= door-hinge) and "der Angel" (= fishing tackle). Only in current German both are feminine.

La ligne tressaille, la canne frémit Mais légère elle ne porte rien dehors. Vous, esprits des eaux obstinés, vous ne donnez Aucun festin au pêcheur. À quoi lui sert son esprit avisé, Les poissons se balançant en se moquant de lui ; Il se tient solidement planté sur la rive , Il ne peut pas entrer dans l'eau, il doit rester sur la terre. La surface lisse se plisse, Agitée par le peuple à écailles, Qui avec délice remue leurs corps Dans les flots sûrs . Les truites frétillent ici et là, Mais la ligne du pêcheur reste vide. Elles sentent ce qu'est la liberté ; Les vielles ruses du pêcheur sont inutiles. La terre est d'une beauté puissante, Mais ce n'est pas un endroit sûr ! Les tempêtes envoient des tas de glace ; La grêle et le gel détruisent Avec un coup, une poussée, Le blé doré, la splendeur des roses. Le petit poisson dessous son toit doux, aucune Tempête depuis la terre ne peut l'atteindre.
