Zu Speier im Saale, da hebt sich ein Klingen, mit Fackeln und Kerzen ein Tanzen und Springen; Graf Eberstein führet den Reihn mit des Kaisers holdseligem Töchterlein. Und als er sie schwingt nun im [luftigen]1 Reigen, da flüstert sie leise, sie kann's nicht verschweigen: "Graf Eberstein, hüte dich fein! Heut' Nacht wird dein Schlößlein gefährdet sein." "Ei!" [denket]2 der Graf, "Euer Kaiserlich Gnaden, so habt Ihr mich darum zum Tanze geladen!" Er sucht sein Roß, läßt seinen Troß und jagt nach seinem gefährdeten Schloß. [Um Ebersteins Veste]3, da wimmelt's von Streitern, sie schleichen im Nebel mit Haken und Leitern. Graf Eberstein grüßet sie fein, er wirft sie vom Wall in die Gräben hinein. [Als nun der Herr Kaiser]4 am Morgen gekommen, da meint er, es [seie]5 die Burg schon genommen. Doch auf dem Wall tanzen mit Schall der Graf und seine Gewappneten all'. "Herr Kaiser, beschleicht Ihr ein andermal Schlößer, tut's Not, Ihr [versteht auf das]6 Tanzen Euch besser, [Euer]7 Töchterlein tanzet so fein, dem soll meine Veste geöffnet sein." Im Schloße des Grafen, da hebt sich ein Klingen, mit Fackeln und Kerzen ein Tanzen und Springen: Graf Eberstein führet den Reihn mit des Kaisers holdseligem Töchterlein. Und als er sie [schwingt nun]8 im bräutlichen Reigen, da flüstert er leise, [nicht kann er's]9 verschweigen: "Schön Jungfräulein, hüte dich fein! Heut' Nacht wird ein Schlößlein gefährdet sein."

À Spire, dans la salle de bal, au son de la musique, Sous les flambeaux et les bougies, on dansait et gambadait ; Le comte Eberstein menait la ronde Avec la gracieuse fille de l'empereur. Et comme il la fait virevolter dans une ronde légère, Elle ne peut se taire, elle lui chuchote tout bas : « Comte Eberstein, protège-toi bien ! Cette nuit ton château sera en danger. » « Hé ! -- pense le comte -- Votre Grâce Impériale, Ainsi m'avez-vous invité à danser ! » Il va chercher son cheval, laisse sa suite Et galope jusqu'à son château menacé. Autour de la forteresse d'Eberstein les combattants pullulent, Ils se glissent dans le brouillard avec crochets et échelles. Le comte Eberstein les accueille au mieux, Du haut de la muraille, il les précipite en-bas dans les fossés. Quand au matin arrive sa majesté l'empereur, Il pense que le château est déjà pris. Mais sur les murs dans un grand hourvari dansent Le comte et tous ses hommes en arme. « Sire empereur, désormais pour vous emparer d'un château, En cas de besoin, vous devriez mieux comprendre la danse, Pour votre fille qui danse si bellement, Les portes de ma forteresse sont ouvertes. Alors dans le château du comte s'élève le son de la musique Sous les flambeaux et les bougies, on danse et gambade ; Le comte Eberstein mène la ronde Avec la gracieuse fille de l'empereur. Et comme il la fait virevolter dans une ronde nuptiale, Il ne peut se taire, il lui chuchote tout bas : « Jolie demoiselle, protège-toi bien ! Cette nuit un petit château sera en danger. »
