Auf dem Berge steht die Hütte, Wo der alte Bergmann wohnt; Dorten rauscht die grüne Tanne, Und erglänzt der goldne Mond. In der Hütte steht ein Lehnstuhl, Ausgeschnitzelt wunderlich, Der darauf sitzt, der ist glücklich, Und der Glückliche bin ich! Auf dem Schemel sitzt die Kleine, Stützt den Arm auf meinen Schoß; Äuglein wie zwei blaue Sterne, Mündlein wie die Purpurros. Und die lieben, blauen Sterne Schaun mich an so himmelgroß, Und sie legt den Liljenfinger Schalkhaft auf die Purpurros. Nein, es sieht uns nicht die Mutter, Denn sie spinnt mit großem Fleiß, Und der Vater spielt die Zither, Und er singt die alte Weis. Und die Kleine flüstert leise, Leise, mit gedämpftem Laut; Manches wichtige Geheimnis Hat sie mir schon anvertraut. «Aber seit die Muhme tot ist, Können wir ja nicht mehr gehn Nach dem Schützenhof zu Goslar, Dorten ist es gar zu schön. Hier dagegen ist es einsam, Auf der kalten Bergeshöh, Und des Winters sind wir gänzlich Wie begraben in dem Schnee. Und ich bin ein banges Mädchen, Und ich fürcht mich wie ein Kind Vor den bösen Bergesgeistern, Die des Nachts geschäftig sind.» Plötzlich schweigt die liebe Kleine, Wie vom eignen Wort erschreckt, Und sie hat mit beiden Händchen Ihre Äugelein bedeckt. Lauter rauscht die Tanne draußen, Und das Spinnrad schnurrt und brummt, Und die Zither klingt dazwischen, Und die alte Weise summt: «Fürcht dich nicht, du liebes Kindchen, Vor der bösen Geister Macht; Tag und Nacht, du liebes Kindchen, Halten Englein bei dir Wacht!»

Il y a dans la cabane une chaise longue Merveilleusement sculptée, Celui qui s'y assied est chanceux, Et celui qui est chanceux, c'est moi ! La petite est assise sur le tabouret , Elle appuie son bras sur mes genoux ; De petits yeux comme deux étoiles bleues Une petite bouche comme une rose pourpre. Et les chères étoiles bleues Me regardent, moi, grand comme le ciel, Et elle pose son doigt de lis Avec malice sur la rose pourpre. Non, la mère ne nous voit pas, Car elle est très occupée à tisser, Et le père joue de la cithare, Et chante à l'ancienne mode. Alors la petite chuchote doucement, Doucement, d'une voix étouffée; Elle m'a déjà confié Maints importants secrets. « Mais depuis que ma tante est morte, On ne peut plus aller Au concours de tir de Goslar, C'est pourtant si joli là-bas. Dehors les sapins bruissent plus fort, Et le rouet ronronne et bourdonne, Et entretemps on entend la cithare, Et la vieille chanson qui fredonne : « N'aies pas peur, ma chère enfant, De la puissance des mauvais esprits ; Nuit et jour, pour toi chère enfant, De petits anges montent la garde ! »
