Zurück bleibt alles Bangen,
Die Brust mit neuem Mute strebt,
Erwacht ein neu Verlangen.

Die Sterne spiegeln sich im Meer,
Und golden glänzt die Flut.
Ich rannte taumelnd hin und her,
Und war nicht schlimm, nicht gut.

Doch niedergezogen
Sind Zweifel und wankender Sinn;
O tragt mich, ihr schaukelnden Wogen,
Zur längst ersehnten Heimat hin.

In lieber, dämmernder Ferne,
Dort rufen heimische Lieder,
Aus jeglichem Sterne
Blickt sie mit sanftem Auge nieder.

Ebne dich, du treue Welle,
Führe mich auf fernen Wegen
Zu der vielgeliebten Schwelle,

Comme j'ai l'esprit frais et joyeux,
J'ai laissé derrière moi tous mes soucis,
Dans ma poitrine se lève un nouveau courage,
S'éveille un nouveau désir.

Les étoiles se reflètent dans la mer,
Et les flots brillent comme de l'or.
Je courais en titubant de-ci et de-là,
Et me sentais ni bien, ni mal.

Pourtant doute et incertitude
Ont fait naufrage :
Ô, vagues turbulentes, portez-moi
Vers ma patrie dont je me languis tant.

Dans ce lointain, crépusculaire et cher,
Des chants familiers m'appellent,
Par les yeux de chaque étoile,
Il me regarde avec tendresse.

Calme-toi,  brave vague,
