Als sie eine alte Romanze sang Ich denke noch der Zaubervollen, Wie sie zuerst mein Auge sah! Wie ihre Töne lieblich klangen Und heimlich süß ins Herze drangen, Entrollten Tränen meinen Wangen - Ich wußte nicht, wie mir geschah. Ein Traum war über mich gekommen: Mir war, als sei ich noch ein Kind, Und säße still, beim Lämpchenscheine, In Mutters frommem Kämmerleine, Und läse Märchen wunderfeine, Derweilen draußen Nacht und Wind. Die Märchen fangen an zu leben, Die Ritter steigen aus der Gruft; Bei Ronzisvall da gibts ein Streiten, Da kommt Herr Roland herzureiten, Viel kühne Degen ihn begleiten, Auch leider Ganelon, der Schuft. Durch den wird Roland schlimm gebettet, Er schwimmt in Blut, und atmet kaum; Kaum mochte fern sein Jadghornzeichen Das Ohr des großen Karls erreichen, Da mußt der Ritter schon erbleichen - Und mit ihm stirbt zugleich mein Traum. Das war ein laut verworrnes Schallen, Das mich aus meinen Träumen rief. Verklungen war jetzt die Legende, Die Leute schlugen in die Hände, Und riefen «Bravo!» ohne Ende; Die Sängerin verneigt sich tief.

Quand elle chantait une ancienne romance Je pense encore à l'enchantement Quand pour la première fois mes yeux la virent ! Comme sa mélodie chantait avec tant de charme Et en secret pénétrait doucement le cœur, Faisant couler des larmes sur mes joues ; Je ne savais comment cela m'arrivait. Un rêve s'était étendu sur moi : C'était comme si j'étais encore un enfant, Assis en silence dans la lueur d'une lampe, Dans la sage chambrette de ma mère, Occupé à lire des contes merveilleux, Avec dehors la nuit et le vent. Les contes commencèrent à prendre vie, Les chevaliers sortent de la crypte ; On se bat à Roncevaux, Alors Roland arrive à cheval, Beaucoup de valeureuses épées l'accompagnent Et aussi, hélas, Ganelon le traître. Par lui Roland aura un mauvais lit, Il nage dans son sang et respire à peine ; C'est tout juste si les appels de son cor Peuvent atteindre les oreilles du grand Charles, Et déjà le chevalier défaille ; Et avec lui mourut mon rêve. C'était une clameur forte et confuse Qui me tirait de mon rêve. Maintenant la légende s'estompait, Les gens frappaient des mains Et criaient « bravo ! » sans arrêt. La chanteuse faisait une profonde révérence.
