Als Weibesarm in jungen Jahren, 
als mich die Tochter weich umschlang, 
da trieb mich in den Schacht zu fahren 
der Arbeit Lohn und dunkler Drang.

Nun schläft mein Mütterchen im Kühlen, 
selbst wählend hat mein Kind gefreit; 
ich kann nicht mehr wie sonst mich fühlen, 
mein Herz hat eine andre Zeit.

An Erd' und Himmel mich zu binden, 
im Glauben meiner mir bewusst; 
im Einen mich, im All zu finden, 
das mein Verlangen, meine Lust!

Und zweigt sich nicht mein Werk hienieden 
bis auf zum Throne, Ast an Ast?
Ist nicht des Hauses stiller Frieden, 
ist Gott nicht in mein Werk gefasst?

Ja, Gottes Wunder strahlen prächtig, 
wo gülden Erz in Tiefen bricht, 
und Gottes Odem wehet mächtig 
um Hacke und um Grubenlicht.

Quando una donna, negli anni della gioventù,
quando mia figlia mi abbracciava dolcemente,
mi spingeva ad andare alla miniera
il compenso del lavoro e un oscuro istinto.
 
Ora la mia mamma dorme nel fresco giaciglio,
con libera scelta mia figlia si è sposata;
io non posso più sentirmi come prima,
il mio cuore ha un altro tempo.
 
Legarmi a terra e cielo,
nella fede e coscienza di me stesso,
trovarmi  nell'Uno, nel Tutto
è ciò che desidero, la mia gioia!
 
E se non vacilla la mia opera quaggiù
fino al trono, ramo su ramo,
non è la tranquilla pace della casa,
non è Dio che è entrato nella mia opera?
 
Sì, le meraviglie di Dio splendono gloriose,
dove la pietra porta l'oro nelle sue profondità,
e il respiro di Dio soffia con forza
sulla zappa e sulla luce delle fosse.
