Ἔρως ποτ᾽ ἐν ῥόδοισι κοιμωμένην μέλιτταν οὐκ εἶδεν, ἀλλ᾽ ἐτρώθη. τὸν δάκτυλον παταχθείς τᾶς χειρὸς ὠλόλυξε, δραμὼν δὲ καὶ πετασθείς πρὸς τὴν καλὴν Κυθήρην «ὄλωλα, μῆτερ,» εἶπεν, «ὄλωλα κἀποθνήσκω· ὄφις μ᾽ ἔτυψε μικρός πτερωτός, ὃν καλοῦσιν μέλιτταν οἱ γεωργοί.» ἃ δ᾽ εἶπεν· «εἰ τὸ κέντρον πονεῖς τὸ τᾶς μελίττας, πόσον δοκεῖς πονοῦσιν, Ἔρως, ὅσους σὺ βάλλεις;»

Es schlief im Rosenbette Ein Bienchen. Eros kam Bald zu derselben Stelle, Doch nicht in Acht es nahm. Da fühlt im zarten Finger Er schon des Bienchens Stich, Er schlägt die Händchen, wimmert, Und weinet bitterlich. Und eilt in raschem Fluge Zur schönen Kypria: "Ich bin verloren, Mutter, O höre, was geschah: Ein klein geflügelt Schlängchen, Sie nennen's Biene, stach Mich in die zarten Händchen!" Und drauf die Mutter sprach: "Fühlst du so große Schmerzen, Von Bienchens Stich verletzt, Wie muß die Wunde brennen, Die dein Geschoss versetzt."
