Der Abend war so dunkelschwer,
und schwer durchs Dunkel schnitt der Kahn;
die Andern lachten um uns her,
als fühlten sie den Frühling nahn.
Der weite Strom lag stumm und fahl,
am Ufer floß ein schwankend Licht,
die Weiden standen starr und kahl.
Ich aber sah dir ins Gesicht
und fühlte deinen Atem flehn
und deine Augen nach mir schrein
und eine Andre vor mir stehn
und heiß [aufschluchzen]1: Ich bin dein!
Das Licht erglänzte nah und mild;
im grauen Wasser schwarz, verschwand
der starren Weiden zitternd Bild.
[Knirschend]2 stieß der Kahn ans Land.

Le soir était sombre et lourd
et la barque coupait l'obscurité avec peine ;
autour de nous les autres riaient,
sentant le printemps s'approcher.
Le large fleuve s'étendait blafard et muet,
sur la rive coulait une lumière vacillante,
les saules étaient figés et dénudés.
Mais je te regardais en face
et sentais ton souffle implorer
et tes yeux crier après moi
et -- une autre être devant moi
et éclater en sanglots : je suis à toi !
La lumière resplendissait, proche et douce ;
dans l'eau grise, disparut
l'image tremblante et noire des saules figés.
En crissant la barque accosta.
