Men loopt bij gedempte trommelklank1;
Hoe ver nog het einde! De weg, hoe lang!
O, was hij maar dood en alles voorbij!
Het lijkt, mijn hart stokt, het breekt in mij.
 
Ik heb in de wereld slechts hem bemind,
Slechts hem die straks men de doek voor bindt!
Bij roff'lende trommen de stoet marcheert;
Daartoe werd ook ik gesommeerd.
 
Nu kijkt hij omhoog een laatste maal
In 't licht van Gods vrolijke zonnestraal;
Nu binden ze hem de ogen af --
O geve God je rust in het graf!
 
Nu hebben er negen scherp gericht;
Acht kogels vlogen langs mijn gezicht.
Zij sidderden allen, ontzet en benard --
Ik echter, ik trof hem midden in 't hart2.
