Plötzlich - stört ihn was an seinem Anzug,
Er beschaut sich rings und findet richtig -
Einen weißen Fleck des hellen Mondes
Auf dem Rücken seines schwarzen Rockes.
 
Warte! denkt er: das ist so ein Gipsfleck!
Wischt und wischt, doch - bringt ihn nicht herunter!
Und so geht er, giftgeschwollen, weiter,
Reibt und reibt bis an den frühen Morgen --
Einen weißen Fleck des hellen Mondes.

Soudain il est dérangé par quelque chose dans son costume,
Il se regarde tout autour et trouve bien
Une tache blanche de lune brillante
Sur le dos de son habit noir.

Attends ! pense-t-il : c'est une tache de plâtre !
Il essuie et essuie, mais -- il ne l'enlève pas !
Et il continue ainsi, rempli de fureur, au loin,
Frotte et frotte jusqu'au grand matin --
Une tache blanche de lune brillante !
