 Er bind't ihn aufrecht feste, verläßt mit ihm das Schloß.

 Doch vor dem hohen Tore, da hält der Sängergreis,
 Da faßt er seine Harfe, sie, aller Harfen Preis,
 An einer Marmorsäule, da hat er sie zerschellt;
 Dann ruft er, daß es schaurig durch Schloß und Gärten gellt:

 L'adolescent a expiré dans les bras de son maître
 Qui l'enveloppe de son manteau et l'installe sur son cheval,
 Il le redresse et l'attache fermement, et quitte le palais avec lui.

 Cependant, devant la haute porte le vieux chanteur s'arrête,
 Là, il saisit sa harpe a laquelle il attache le plus grand prix,
 Contre une colonne de marbre, il l'a écrasée,
 Puis son épouvantable cri résonne à travers palais et jardins :
