Man merkte, daß der Wein geraten war:
Der alte Bettler wankte aus dem Tor,
Die Wangen glühend, wie ein Rosenflor,
Mutwillig flatterte sein Silberhaar.
Und vor und hinter ihm die Kinderschar
Umdrängt' ihn, ein lauter Jubelchor,
Draus ragte schwank der Selige empor,
Sich vielfach spiegelnd in den Äuglein klar.
Am Morgen, als die Kinderlein noch schliefen,
Von jungen Träumen drollig angelacht,
Sah man den roten Wald von Silber triefen.
Es war ein Reif gefallen über Nacht;
Der Alte lag erfroren in dem tiefen
Gebüsch, vom Rausch im Himmel aufgewacht.

Ses joues étaient rouges comme un parterre de roses
Ses cheveux argentés flottaient avec insouciance.
Et par devant, par derrière, une bande d'enfants
S'agglutinait autour de lui, bruyant chœur jubilatoire
D'où le bienheureux s'élevait en titubant,
Reflété par mille petits yeux clairs.
Au matin,alors que les enfants dormaient encore,
Riant à leurs jeunes rêves cocasses
On vit la rouge forêt dégouliner d'argent.
Une gelée blanche était tombée dans la nuit,
Le vieil homme gisait gelé au fond
D'un buisson, réveillé au ciel de son ivresse.
