Ein Wandrer läßt sein helles Lied erklingen:
Nun schweigt er still und schwindet in den Föhren;
Ich möchte länger noch ihn singen hören,
Doch tröst' ich mich: er kann nicht ewig singen.
Der Wandrer schweigt, doch jene Felsen bringen
Mir seinen Widerhall in dunklen Chören,
Als wollten sie sein Lied zurückbeschwören,
Nun ist es still -, den Quell nur hör' ich springen.
Der Wandrer schwieg und schied; ich sprach gelassen:
Fahr wohl! warum denn fühl' ich jetzt ein Trauern,
Daß länger nicht sein Nachhall mochte dauern?
Mehr als des Menschen Tod will mich's erfassen,
Wenn ihn bereits nach wenig Tagesneigen
Hier, dort noch einer nennt - bis alle schweigen.

Un voyageur a fait éclater son chant limpide :
Maintenant il se tait et disparaît dans les pins ;
J'aurais aimé l'entendre chanter plus longtemps,
Mais je me console : il ne peut chanter éternellement.
Le voyageur s'est tu, pourtant ces rochers m'apportent
Son écho, tel un sombre chœur,
Comme s'ils voulaient faire resurgir son chant.
Puis c'est le silence, je n'entends plus que le jet de la source.
Le voyageur s'est tu et est parti ; j'ai tranquillement dit :
Adieu ! Alors pourquoi maintenant s'affliger
Qu'un écho ne puisse durer plus longtemps ?
Plus que par la mort de l'homme, je serai ému
Si après seulement quelques jours,
Ici ou là quelqu'un le mentionne encore et que tout se taise.
