Und Abendglocken schallen
Fern von des Waldes Saum.

Was wollt ihr mich so wild verlocken
hier in der Einsamkeit?
Wie in der Heimat klingen diese Glocken
Aus stiller Kinderzeit-
Ich wende mich erschrocken,
Ach, was mich liebt, ist weit!

So brecht hervor nur, alte Lieder,
Und brecht das Herz mir ab!
Noch einmal grüß ich aus der Ferne wieder,
Was ich nur Liebes hab,
Mich aber zieht es nieder
Vor Wehmut wie ins Grab.

La forêt devient fauve, les feuilles tombent,
Comme l'espace est vide et calme !
Seuls les ruisseaux passent sous le couvert des hêtres,
Bruissant doucement, comme en rêve,
Et les cloches du soir résonnent,
Loin de la lisière de la forêt.

Pourquoi m'attirez-vous si violemment,
Ici, dans cette solitude ?
Ces cloches sonnent comme dans mon pays
Aux années calmes de mon enfance ;
Je me retourne, effaré,
Hélas, celle qui m'aime est loin !

Alors éclatez, anciennes chansons,
Et brisez-moi le cœur !
Encore une fois, je salue de loin
Celle qui seule a mon amour,
Et j'en suis anéanti de mélancolie, 
Comme dans une tombe.
