Zwölf stumme Männer trugen mich in einem Sarge von Kristall hinunter an des Meeres Strand, bis an der Brandung Rand hinaus. So hatte ich's im Testament bestimmt: Man bette meinen Leib in einem Sarge von Kristall und trage ihn der Ebbe nach, bis sie den tiefsten Stand erreicht. Der Sonne ungeheurer Gott stand bis zum Gürtel schon im Meer: An seinem Glanze tränkte sich wollüstig noch einmal die Welt. Ich selber lag in rotem Schein wie ein Gebilde aus Porphyr. Da streckte katzengleich die Flut die erste Welle nach mir aus. Und ging zurück und schob sich vor und tastete am Sarg hinauf und wandte flüsternd sich zur Flucht. Und kam zurück und griff und stieß und raunte lauter, warf sich kühn darüber, einmal, vielemal. Und blieb, und ihrer Macht gewiss, umlief frohlockend sie mein Haus und pochte dran und schäumte auf, als ihrer Faust es widerstand. Und hoch und höher wuchs und wuchs das Wasser um mein gläsern Schloss. Nun wankte es, als hätt' ein Arm und noch ein Arm es rauh gepackt, und scholl in allen Fugen, als ein Wellenberg auf ihm sich brach und es wie ein Lawinensturz umdröhnte und verschüttete. Und langsam wich der nasse Sand. Und seitlich neigte sich der Sarg. Und, unterwühlt und übertobt. begann er um sich selber sich schwerfällig in die See zu drehn. Zu mächtig, dass die Brandung ihn zum Strand zu schleppen hätt' vermocht, vergrub er rollend sich und mich in totenstillen Meeresgrund. So lag ich denn, wie ich gewollt. Und dunkle Fische zogen still zu meinen Häupten hin und her. Und schwarzer Seetang überschwamm mein Grab. Und mein Bewusstsein schwand.

Douze hommes muets m'emportaient dans un cercueil de cristal là-bas sur la plage près de la mer, jusqu'au bord des vagues déferlantes Dans mon testament je l'avais ainsi défini : que l'on couche mon corps dans un cercueil de cristal et qu'on le porte à marée basse jusqu'à atteindre le niveau le plus bas. Le soleil, dieu colossal, était déjà dans la mer jusqu'à la ceinture. À sa luisance le monde s'abreuvait voluptueusement encore une fois. J'étais moi-même étendu dans une lueur rouge comme un objet de porphyre. C'est alors que le flot, pareil à un chat allongea sa première vague vers moi. Puis se retira, et se poussa en avant et ouvrit le cercueil à tâtons et en chuchotant se retourna et prit la fuite. Et revint et s'y agrippa et donna un coup et murmura plus fort, se jeta hardiment dessus, une fois, de nombreuses fois. Et il resta, certain de sa force il courait avec jubilation autour de ma maison et tapait dessus et écumait en s'acharnant sur elle de son poing. Et l'eau monta de plus en plus haut autour de mon palais de verre. Maintenant il vacillait, comme si un bras et un autre bras l'avait rudement attrapé, et il résonnait de tous ses joints, comme si une montagne d'eau avait éclaté sur lui et comme si une avalanche grondait autour de lui et l'ensevelissait. Et lentement le sable mouillé disparut. Et le cercueil s'inclina sur le côté. Et enfoui dessous et bousculé dessus, il commença de lui-même à se tourner lourdement vers la mer. Trop puissant pour que les déferlantes puissent le traîner sur la plage, il s'enterra en roulant, et moi avec, au fond de la mer dans un silence de mort. Je suis depuis lors comme je l'ai voulu. Et de sombres poissons passèrent en silence çà et là près de ma tête. Et un noir fucus flotta au-dessus de ma tombe. Et ma conscience défaillit.
