Language: Latin
Available translation(s): ENG
Responsum [acceperat]1 Simeon a Spiritu Sancto,
non visurum se mortem
nisi videret Christum Domini.
Et benedixit Deum et dixit:
Nunc dimittis servum tuum Domine
secundum verbum tuum in pace:
Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum, Domine.
Cum ergo cognovisset,
accepit eum in ulnas suas et portabatur et ait:
Nunc dimittis servum tuum Domine
secundum verbum tuum in pace:
Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum, Domine.
W. Byrd sets stanza 1
L. Marenzio sets stanza 1

Simeon received this reply
Language: English  after the Latin
Simeon received this reply from the Holy Spirit,
that he would not see his death until
he saw the Christ [anointed one] of the Lord.
And he blessed God and said:
Now let your servant, o Lord,
depart according to your word in peace;
Because my eyes have seen your salvation, o Lord.
When therefore he had recognised him,
he took him in his arms and while he was carrying him he said:
Now let your servant, o Lord, depart
according to your word in peace;
Because my eyes have seen your salvation, o Lord.
