In tiefster Erde ruht ein alt Gesetz,
Dem treibt mich's, rastlos immer nachzuspüren;
Und grabend kann ich Andres [nicht]1 vollführen,
Wohl spannt auch mir die Welt ihr goldnes Netz,

Wohl tönt auch mir der Klugheit seicht Geschwätz:
»Du wirst die Müh und Zeit umsonst verlieren.«
[Das soll mich nicht in meiner Arbeit irren,]2
Ich grabe glühend fort, so nun, wie stets.

Und soll mich nie des Findens Wonne laben,
[Soll]3 ich mein Grab mit dieser Hoffnung graben:
[Es löscht die Flammen doch, die marternd brennen.]4

Drum lasset Ruhe mir in meinem Streben!
Ein Grab mag man [doch]5 jedem gerne geben,
Wollt ihr es [mir denn nicht]6, ihr Lieben, gönnen?

Désir du chercheur de trésor

Dans la terre profonde repose une vieille loi,
Qui m'amène sans cesse à toujours chercher ;
Et pendant que je creuse je ne peux rien faire d'autre.
Le monde peut étendre son filet doré pour m'attirer,

Le bavardage vide de la sagesse peut résonner pour moi :
« Tu déploies tes efforts et ton temps en vain ! »
Cela ne me détournera pas de ma tâche,
Je creuse avec ardeur, maintenant comme jamais.

Et si la joie de la découverte ne me réconforte jamais,
Si je creuse ma tombe avec cet espoir,
Pourtant je descends volontiers, car mon désir est satisfait.

Aussi laissez-moi en paix dans mon agonie,
Une tombe pour chaque homme est donnée volontiers,
Vous ne voudriez pas me l'accorder, mes amis ?
