Läßt so, o Sünder, nicht genesen Dich dieser Reuetränen Fall? Wie glüh'nd die Wunden der Brust gewesen, Ein Himmelstropfen, er heilt sie all'! Tenor-Solo mit Chor Und sieh, demütig betend kniet Der Mann dort an des Kindes Seite, Indes ein Sonnenstrahl auf beide, Den Sünder und den Reinen glüht. Und Hymnen durch den Himmel schweben, Denn einer Seele ward vergeben! Gesunken war der gold'ne Ball, Noch lagen sie auf ihren Knien, Da fiel ein rein'rer, schön'rer Strahl, Als je aus Sonn'und Sternen schien, Auf jene Träne. Ein sterblich' Auge nähm' ihn zwar Als Meteor, als Nordlicht wahr, Doch weiß die Peri wohl: der Schein, Es muß des Engels Lächeln sein, Womit er mild die Träne grüßt, Die bald den Himmel ihr erschließt.

La Péri Une larme est tombée sur la terre D'Égypte, brûlée par la chaleur de Juin, De la lune en bas, D'un tel pouvoir de guérison, que sur l'heure Le démon de la peste s'envola Et la santé vivifia le ciel et la terre. Ô pécheur, n'es-tu pas guéri Par la chute de ces larmes de repentir Bien que les blessures du cœur aient été brûlantes, Une goutte du ciel les guérit toutes ! Ténor solo avec Chœur Et regardez, humblement, en prière s'agenouille L'homme au côté de l'enfant, Pendant qu'un rayon de soleil sur tous les deux, Le pécheur et le pur, brille. Et des hymnes à travers le ciel flottent, Parce qu'une âme a été pardonnée ! La sphère dorée avait disparu Pendant qu'ils étaient à genoux, Alors tomba un rayon encore plus pur et plus beau Comme jamais il n'en est venu du soleil ou des étoiles, Sur cette larme. Des hymnes à travers le ciel flottent Parce qu'une âme a été pardonnée ! Un œil mortel le prit pour Un météore, pour une aurore boréale, Mais la Péri savait bien : l'éclat, Ce devait être le sourire de l'ange, Par lequel il accueillait avec douceur cette larme Qui bientôt lui ouvrirait le ciel.
