Auf unserer alten Kommode
brannten der Kerzen zwei;
die Mutter sprach mit dem Tode,
da brach ihr die Stimme entzwei.

Und wie ich klein in der Stille stand,
reichte ich nicht in das fremde Land,
das meine Mutter bange erkannt,
ragte nur bis zum Bettesrand,
fand allein ihre blasse Hand,
von der ich Segen bekam.

Aber der Vater, von Wahnsinn wund,
riss mich hoch an der Mutter Mund,
der mir den Segen nahm.

Il y a de nombreux bacs sur les rivières,
et l'un d'eux le portera sûrement ;
mais je ne peux l'embrasser
quand il passera.

Dehors c'était le mois de mai.

Sur notre vieille commode
brûlaient deux chandelles ;
la mère parlait avec la mort,
et sa voix se brisait en morceaux.

Et je me tenais tout petit en silence,
je n'atteignis pas la terre étrangère
que ma mère percevait avec crainte,
je me dressais seulement jusqu'au bord du lit,
trouvant uniquement sa main pâle,
de qui je reçus sa bénédiction.

Mais mon père, fou de douleur,
me souleva jusqu'à la bouche de ma mère,
qui me prit la bénédiction.
