Mit langem Barte, bleich und blaß ein armer Greis in Ketten saß, ihm war der Hungertod beschieden. Er seufzte tief, er seufzte schwer: Ist denn für mich, o Gott und Herr, nicht Hoffnung mehr hienieden? Da knistert's draussen, ängstlich harrt der hungernde Greis, die Pforte knarrt, die fromme Tochter naht sich leise. Sie stillt ein Kind mit Mutterlust! Sie nimmt das Kind von ihrer Brust und reichet sie dem Greise.
