Das frohe Leben ist verstummet
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Das frohe Leben ist verstummet;
In meine Nacht Johanna's Bild.

The joyful life has fallen mute
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
The joyful life has fallen mute,
Only from the forests a breeze comes softly forth,
And here and there a beetle buzzes,
And a choir of frogs echoes into the distance.
The eye of day is once more closed,
Past is the lustre and glow of spring,
Night sinks upon valley and mountain,
Palely gleams only the water of the Rhine.
And as the evening star twinkles
Through blossoming trees so joyfully and mildly,
It seems to me as if into my night
Johanna's image shimmers from afar.
