Ach, eine Taube singt am frühen Morgen
Voll dunkler Schwermut in dem grünen Wald.
Sie denkt des Freundes, der verfloßnen Tage,
Und ihre kummervollen Lieder wecken
Den eignen Kummer mir in wunder Brust.
Oft brachte mich ihr Weinen um den Schlaf,
Mein Weinen auch hat sie nicht schlafen lassen;
Ich jammre, aber sie versteht es nicht,
Sie jammert, und auch ich versteh es nicht,
Unmöglich, daß wir uns begreiflich machen,
Nur daß sie leidet, – dieses fühle ich,
Nur daß ich leide, – ja, das fühlt sie wohl.
