Dir wird so wohl in ihrer Nähe, als gingst du durch ein Saatgefilde, durch das der Hauch des Abends wehe, voll frommen Friedens und voll Milde.

J' appelle bleuets les créatures douces aux yeux bleus, qui, peu exigeantes, dans leur attitude silencieuse, transmettent la rosée de paix qu'elles aspirent de leurs propres âmes claires à tout ce dont elles s'approchent; inconscientes des joyaux de sentiment qu'elles ont recus de la main du ciel. Tu te sens tellement bien dans leur présence, comme si tu te promenais dans un champ de semailles par lequel vole le souffle du soir plein de paix pieux et plein de douceur.

Mohnblumen sind die runden, rotblutigen gesunden, die sommersproßgebraunten, die immer froh gelaunten, kreuzbraven, kreuzfidelen, tanznimmermüden Seelen; die unter'm Lachen weinen und nur geboren scheinen, die Kornblumen zu necken, und dennoch oft verstecken die weichsten, besten Herzen, im Schlinggewächs von Scherzen; die man, weiß Gott, mit Küssen ersticken würde müssen, wär' man nicht immer bange, umarmest du die Range, sie springt ein voller Brander aufflammend auseinander.

Les coquelicots, ce sont les âmes rondes, au sang rouge, en bonne santé, bronzées par des taches de rousseur, toujours de bonne humeur, toutes sages, toutes contentes, inlassables de la danse; qui pleurent en riant et qui semblent n' être nées que pour taquiner les bleuets, et qui pourtant cachent souvent des coeurs les plus doux et les plus gentils parmi des plantes grimpantes de plaisanteries; qu' on devrait, parbleu, étouffer par des baisers, si l'on ne craignait pas chaque fois qu'en serrant la polissonne dans ses bras, comme un brûlot chargé, elle s' éclaterait en flammes.

Aber Epheu nenn' ich jene Mädchen mit den sanften Worten, mit dem Haar, dem schlichten, hellen um den leis' gewölbten Brau'n, mit den braunen seelenvollen Rehenaugen, die in Tränen steh'n so oft, in ihren Tränen gerade sind unwiderstehlich; ohne Kraft und Selbstgefühl, schmucklos mit verborg'ner Blüte, doch mit unerschöpflich tiefer treuer inniger Empfindung können sie mit eigner Triebkraft nie sich heben aus den Wurzeln, sind geboren, sich zu ranken liebend um ein ander Leben: an der ersten Lieb'umrankung hängt ihr ganzes Lebensschicksal, denn sie zählen zu den seltnen Blumen, die nur einmal blühen.

Kennst du die Blume, die märchenhafte, sagengefeierte Wasserrose? Sie wiegt auf ätherischem, schlankem Schafte das durchsicht'ge Haupt, das farbenlose, sie blüht auf schilfigem Teich im Haine, gehütet vom Schwan, der umkreiset sie einsam, sie erschließt sich nur dem Mondenscheine, mit dem ihr der silberne Schimmer gemeinsam: so blüht sie, die zaub'rische Schwester der Sterne, umschwärmt von der träumerisch dunklen Phaläne, die am Rande des Teichs sich sehnet von ferne, und sie nimmer erreicht, wie sehr sie sich sehne. Wasserrose, so nenn' ich die schlanke, nachtlock'ge Maid, alabastern von Wangen, in dem Auge der ahnende tiefe Gedanke, als sei sie ein Geist und auf Erden gefangen. Wenn sie spricht, ist's wie silbernes Wogenrauschen, wenn sie schweigt, ist's die ahnende Stille der Mondnacht; sie scheint mit den Sternen Blicke zu tauschen, deren Sprache die gleiche Natur sie gewohnt macht; du kannst nie ermüden, in's Aug' ihr zu schau'n, das die seidne, lange Wimper umsäumt hat, und du glaubst, wie bezaubert von seligem Grau'n, was je die Romantik von Elfen geträumt hat.

Connais-tu la fleur, la fabuleuse nénuphar, célébrée dans les légendes? Sur une tige mince et éthérée elle berce sa tête transparente et incolore; elle fleurit sur l' étang de roseaux dans le bosquet, gardée par le cygne qui tourne autour d'elle solitairement, elle ne s'ouvre qu'au clair de lune avec qui elle a en commun le reflet argenté: c'est comme ca qu' elle fleurit, soeur magique des étoiles; autour d'elle tournoie la phalène sombre et rêveuse qui, au bord de l' étang, de loin, est envahie de nostalgie et ne l' atteind jamais, malgré qu'elle rêve de l'avoir. J' appelle nénuphar la demoiselle mince aux yeux foncés bouclés, aux joues albâtres, dans l'oeil, l'idée profonde et intuitive comme si elle était un spectre retenu sur terre. Quand elle parle, c' est comme le bruit argenté des flots, quand elle se tait, c' est le silence intuitif de la nuit de lune, elle semble échanger des regards avec les étoiles dont la langue lui est familière par nature. Tu ne te fatigues jamais de lui regarder dans les yeux bordés par le long cil de soie et tu crois, sous le charme d' une épouvante de bonheur, tout ce que le romantisme a pu rêver des sylphides.
