1. Liebesbotschaft [sung text checked 1 time]
Rauschendes Bächlein,
So silbern und hell,
Eilst zur Geliebten
So munter und schnell?
Ach trautes Bächlein
Mein Bote sey Du;
Bringe die Grüße
Des Fernen ihr zu.

All' ihre Blumen
Im Garten gepflegt,
Die sie so lieblich
Am Busen trägt,
Und ihre Rosen
In purpurner Gluth,
Bächlein, erquicke
Mit kühlender Fluth.

[Wenn]1 sie am Ufer,
In Träume versenkt,
Meiner gedenkend
Das Köpfchen hängt;
Tröste die Süße
Mit freundlichem Blick,
Denn der Geliebte
Kehrt bald zurück.

Neigt sich die Sonne
Mit röthlichem Schein,
Wiege das Liebchen
In Schlummer ein.
Rausche sie murmelnd
In süße Ruh,
Flüstre ihr Träume
Der Liebe zu.

1. Message d'amour
Ruisselet murmurant,
Argenté et si clair,
Presse‑toi vers ma bien‑aimée,
Gai et rapide
Ah ! fidèle ruisselet,
Sois mon messager ;
Apporte‑lui le salut
De l'absent.

Toutes ses fleurs,
En son jardin cultivées,
Qu'avec tant de charme
Elle porte à la poitrine,
Et ses roses
Dans leur éclat purpurin,
Ruisselet, réconforte‑les
De ton flot rafraîchissant.

Lorsque sur la rive,
Perdue en ses rêves,
En pensant à moi
Elle penche sa petite tête,
Console la douce
D'un regard ami,
Car le bien‑aimé
Sera bientôt de retour.

Le soleil se couche
Dans une lumière rouge,
Il berce la bien‑aimée
Qui s'endort.
Chuchote‑lui
Un doux repos
Et murmure‑lui
Des rêves d'amour.

2. Kriegers Ahnung [sung text checked 1 time]
In tiefer Ruh liegt um mich her
Der Waffenbrüder Kreis;

An ihrem Busen warm!
Wie freundlich schien des Heerdes Gluth,
Lag sie in meinem Arm!

Hier, wo der [Flammen]3 düstrer Schein
Ach nur auf Waffen spielt,
Hier fühlt die Brust sich ganz allein,
Der Wehmuth Thräne quillt.

Herz! Daß der Trost Dich nicht verläßt!
[Es]4 ruft noch manche Schlacht. -
Bald ruh' ich wohl und schlafe fest,
Herzliebste - Gute Nacht!

2. Pensées de guerrier
Autour de moi, dans une profonde quiétude,
Dorment en cercle mes compagnons d'arme ;

3. Frühlingssehnsucht [sung text checked 1 time]
Säuselnde Lüfte
Wehend so mild,
Blumiger Düfte
Athmend erfüllt!
Wie haucht Ihr mich wonnig begrüßend an!
Wie habt Ihr dem pochenden Herzen gethan?
Es möchte Euch folgen auf luftiger Bahn!
Wohin?

Bächlein, so munter
Rauschend zumal,
[Wallen]1 hinunter
Silbern in's Thal.
Die schwebende Welle, dort eilt sie dahin!
Tief spiegeln sich Fluren und Himmel darin.
Was ziehst Du mich, sehnend verlangender Sinn,
Hinab?

Grüßender Sonne
Spielendes Gold,
Hoffende Wonne
Bringest Du hold.
Warum?

Grünend umkränzet
Wälder und Höh'!
Schimmernd erglänzet
Blüthenschnee!
So dränget sich Alles zum bräutlichen Licht;
Es schwellen die Keime, die Knospe bricht;
Sie haben gefunden was ihnen gebricht:
Und Du?

Rastloses Sehnen!

3. Ardeurs du printemps
Des brises frémissantes,
Si douces, exhalent
Leur respiration chargée
De parfums floraux !
Avec quelle volupté votre souffle me salue !

Pourquoi m'attires‑tu, esprit languissant et désirant,
Vers en bas ?

Affable soleil
Aux jeux d'or,
Tu apportes, gracieux,
L'espoir de voluptés !
Combien ton image heureuse et accueillante me rafraîchit !
Pourquoi ?

Le verdissement couronne
Forêts et hauteurs !
La neige des bourgeons
Brille avec éclat !
Ainsi toute chose aspire à la lumière nuptiale ;
Les germes gonflent, les bourgeons éclatent ;
Ils ont trouvé ce qui les brise :
Et toi ?

Langueur incessante !
Toi seule !

4. Ständchen [sung text checked 1 time]
Leise flehen meine Lieder
Durch die Nacht zu Dir;
In den stillen Hain hernieder,
Liebchen, komm' zu mir!

Flüsternd schlanke Wipfel rauschen
In des Mondes Licht;
Des Verräthers feindlich Lauschen
Fürchte, Holde, nicht.

Hörst die Nachtigallen schlagen?
Ach! sie flehen Dich,
Mit der Töne süßen Klagen
Flehen sie für mich.

Sie verstehn des Busens Sehnen,
Kennen Liebesschmerz,
Rühren mit den Silbertönen
Jedes weiche Herz.

Laß auch Dir die Brust bewegen,
Liebchen, höre mich!
Bebend harr' ich Dir entgegen;
Komm', beglücke mich!

4. Sérénade
Doucement mes chants t'implorent
À travers la nuit ;
En bas,dans le calme bosquet,
Mignonne, rejoins‑moi !

Chuchotant, les sveltes cimes chantent
Dans la lumière de la lune ;
Le guet malveillant du perfide,
Belle, ne le crains pas.

Entends‑tu chanter les rossignols ?
Ah ! ils t'implorent,
D'une douce voix plaintive,
Ils t'implorent pour moi.

Ils comprennent le cœur alangui,
Connaissent la peine d'amour,
Ils touchent de leurs voix d'argent
Celui au cœur tendre.

Laisse aussi ton cœur s'attendrir,
Mignonne, écoute‑moi !
En tremblant je t'attends !
Viens, fais‑moi plaisir !

5. Aufenthalt [sung text checked 1 time]
Rauschender Strom,
Brausender Wald,
Starrender Fels
Mein Aufenthalt.

Wie sich die Welle
An Welle reiht,
Fließen die Thränen
Mir ewig erneut.

Hoch in den Kronen
Wogend sich's regt,
So unaufhörlich
Mein Herze schlägt.

Und wie des Felsen
Uraltes Erz,
Ewig derselbe
Bleibet mein Schmerz.

Rauschender Strom,
Brausender Wald,
Starrender Fels
Mein Aufenthalt.

5. Séjour
Fleuve frémissant,
Forêt mugissante,
Falaise abrupte,
Mon séjour.

Comme la vague
Suit la vague,
Mes larmes coulent
Éternellement renouvelées.

Là-haut les cimes
Ondoyantes s'agitent,
De même, sans cesse,
Mon cœur bat.

Et comme l'airain
Séculaire du rocher,
Ma douleur reste
Éternellement la même.

Fleuve frémissant,
Forêt mugissante,
Falaise abrupte,
Mon séjour.

6. In der Ferne [sung text checked 1 time]
Wehe dem Fliehenden
Welt hinaus ziehenden! -
Fremde durchmessenden,
Heimath vergessenden,
Mutterhaus hassenden,
Freunde verlassenden
Folget kein Segen, ach!
Auf ihren Wegen nach!

Herze, das sehnende,
Auge, das thränende,
Sehnsucht, nie endende,
Heimwärts sich wendende!
Busen, der wallende,
Klage, verhallende,
Abendstern, blinkender,
Hoffnungslos sinkender!

Lüfte, Ihr säuselnden,
Wellen sanft kräuselnden,
Sonnenstrahl, eilender,
Nirgend verweilender:
Die mir mit Schmerze, ach!
Dies treue Herze brach, -
Grüßt von [dem]1 Fliehenden,
Welt hinaus ziehenden!

6. Au loin
Malheur au fuyard,
Cheminant de par le monde !
Parcourant les terres étrangères,
Oubliant sa patrie,
Haïssant sa maison natale,
Abandonnant ses amis
Poursuivant son chemin, hélas !
Sans aucune bénédiction.

Cœur languissant,
Yeux larmoyants,
Nostalgie infinie,
Se retournant vers la patrie !
Poitrine brûlante,
Plainte au loin expirant,
Étoile du soir scintillante,
Se noyant sans espoir !

Vents frémissants
Vagues moutonnantes,

Ade, Du muntre, Du fröhliche Stadt, Ade!
Schon scharret mein Rösslein mit lustigem Fuß;
Ade, Du muntre, Du fröhliche Stadt, Ade!

Ade, Ihr Bäume, Ihr Gärten so grün, Ade!
Nun reit' ich am silbernen Strome entlang,
Weit schallend ertönet mein Abschiedsgesang;
Ade, Ihr Bäume, Ihr Gärten so grün, Ade!

Ade, Ihr freundlichen [Mägdelein]4 dort, Ade!
Was schaut Ihr aus blumenumduftetem Haus

Wie bin ich Euch Sternlein am Himmel so hold;

Ade, Du schimmerndes Fensterlein hell, Ade!
Ade, Du schimmerndes Fensterlein hell, Ade!

Ade, Ihr Sterne, verhüllet Euch grau! - Ade!
Des [Fensterleins]8 trübes verschimmerndes Licht
Ersetzt Ihr unzähligen Sterne mir nicht;
- Ade!

7. Adieux
Adieu ! toi légère, toi joyeuse ville, adieu !
Déjà mon petit cheval piaffe, le pied folâtre ;
Tu ne m'as encore jamais vu triste,

Au loin retentit l'écho de mon chant d'adieu ;

Adieu, cher soleil, tu vas te reposer, adieu !
Maintenant brille l'or des scintillantes étoiles.
Je suis comme vous, petites étoiles si belles au ciel ;

8. Der Atlas [sung text checked 1 time]

Toi, coeur orgueilleux, tu l'as bien voulu!
Tu voulais être heureux, éternellement heureux,
Ou bien éternellement misérable, coeur orgueilleux,
Et bien maintenant tu es misérable.

Ich stand in [dunkeln]1 Träumen
Und [starrte]2 ihr Bildniß an,
Und das geliebte Antlitz
Heimlich zu leben begann.

Um ihre Lippen zog sich

9. J'étais plongé en de sombres rêveries
J'étais plongé en de sombres rêveries
Et fixais son portrait,
Alors le visage aimé
Commença à s'animer secrètement.

Autour de ses lèvres se dessina
Un merveilleux sourire
Et des larmes mélancoliques
Brillèrent dans ses yeux.

Mes larmes aussi coulèrent
Le long de mes joues -
Hélas, je ne puis croire,
Que je t'ai perdue!

10. Toi, jolie fille du pêcheur
Toi, jolie fille du pêcheur,
Tire la barque à terre ;
Viens vers moi et assieds-toi,
Cajolons-nous main dans la main.

Pose ta petite tête sur mon cœur,
Et n'aies pas peur ;
Insouciante, n'as tu pas confiance,

11. Die Stadt [sung text checked 1 time]
Am fernen Horizonte
Erscheint, wie ein Nebelbild,
Die Stadt mit ihren Thürmen,
In Abenddämmrung gehüllt.

Ein feuchter Windzug kräuselt
Die graue Wasserbahn;
Mit traurigem Tacte rudert
Der Schiffer in meinem Kahn.

Die Sonne hebt sich noch einmal
Leuchtend vom Boden empor,
Und zeigt mir jene Stelle,
Wo ich das Liebste verlor.

11. La ville
À l'horizon lointain
Apparaît, comme une image de brume,
La ville et ses tours,
Enveloppée du crépuscule du soir.

Un courant d'air humide fronce
L'onde grise ;
Le marin dans ma barque
Rame d'une cadence triste.

Le soleil se découpe encore une fois
Brillant au-dessus du sol
Et me montre cet endroit,
Où j'ai perdu ce que j'avais de plus cher.

Das Meer erglänzte weit hinaus,
Im letzten Abendscheine;
Wir saßen am einsamen Fischerhaus,
Wir saßen stumm und alleine.

Der Nebel stieg, das Wasser schwoll,
Die Möve flog hin und wieder;
Aus deinen Augen, liebevoll,
Fielen die Thränen nieder.

Ich sah sie fallen auf deine Hand,
Und bin auf's Knie gesunken;
Ich hab' von deiner weißen Hand
Die Thränen fortgetrunken.

Seit jener Stunde verzehrt sich mein Leib,
Die Seele stirbt vor Sehnen; -
Mich hat das unglückseel'ge Weib
Vergiftet mit ihren Thränen.

12. Au bord de la mer
La mer resplendissait loin là-bas
Dans les dernières lumières du soir ;

Les mouettes volaient de-ci de-là ;
De tes yeux aimants
Tombaient des larmes.

Je les voyais tomber sur ta main
Et suis tombé à genoux ;
De ta blanche main
J'ai bu les larmes.

Depuis cette heure mon corps se consume,
Mon âme meurt de langueur ;
La malheureuse femme
De ses larmes m'a empoisonné.

13. Der Doppelgänger [sung text checked 1 time]
In diesem Hause wohnte mein Schatz;

Und ringt die Hände, vor Schmerzensgewalt;

Was äffst du nach mein Liebesleid,
Das mich gequält auf dieser Stelle,
So manche Nacht, in alter Zeit?

13. Le Sosie
La nuit est calme, les ruelles tranquilles,
Mon trésor habitait cette maison ;

Et de violente douleur se tord les mains ;
Avec horreur, lorsque je vois son visage
La lune me montre ma propre personne.

Toi, sosie, toi blême compagnon !
Que singes-tu la douleur de mon amour,
Qui, à cet endroit m'a torturé
De si nombreuses nuits, aux temps anciens ?
