1. Im wunderschönen Monat Mai [sung text checked 1 time]
Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,
Als alle Knospen sprangen, 1
Da ist in meinem Herzen
Die Liebe aufgegangen.

Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,
Als alle Vögel sangen, 2
Da hab' ich ihr gestanden
Mein Sehnen und Verlangen.

1.
Au magnifique mois de mai,
Lorsque tous les bourgeons s'ouvraient,
Dans mon cœur
L'amour s'est éveillé.

Au magnifique mois de mai,
Lorsque tous les oiseaux chantaient,
Je lui ai avoué
Mes aspirations et mes désirs.

2. Aus meinen Tränen spriessen [sung text not yet checked]
Aus meinen Tränen sprießen
Viel blühende Blumen hervor,
Und meine Seufzer werden
Ein Nachtigallenchor.

Und wenn du mich lieb hast, Kindchen,
Schenk' ich dir die Blumen all',
Und vor deinem Fenster soll klingen
Das Lied der Nachtigall.

2.

La petite, la délicate, la pure, l'unique ;
Elle-même, source de tout amour,
Est rose, lis, et colombe et soleil.

4. Wenn ich in deine Augen seh' [sung text not yet checked]
Wenn ich in deine Augen seh',
So schwindet [all' mein Leid]1 und Weh;
Doch wenn ich küße deinen Mund,
So werd' ich ganz und gar gesund.

Wenn ich mich lehn' an deine Brust,
Kommt's über mich wie Himmelslust;
Doch wenn du sprichst: ich liebe dich!
[So]2 muß ich weinen bitterlich.

4.
Lorsque je regarde dans tes yeux,
Tous mes maux et mes souffrances s'effacent ;
Quand  j'embrasse ta bouche,
Je suis complètement guéri.

Lorsque je m'appuie sur ton sein,
La félicité du ciel me submerge ;
Quand tu dis : je t'aime !
Alors je pleure amèrement.

5. Ich will meine Seele tauchen [sung text not yet checked]
Ich will meine Seele tauchen
In den Kelch der Lilie hinein;
Die Lilie soll klingend hauchen
Ein Lied von der Liebsten mein.

Das Lied soll schauern und beben
Wie der Kuß von ihrem Mund,
Den sie mir einst gegeben
In wunderbar süßer Stund'.

Je veux plonger mon âme
Dans le calice du lis ;

Peinte sur un cuir doré ;
Dans le désert de ma vie
Elle a gracieusement rayonné.

Des fleurs et des angelots y planent
Autour de Notre Dame ;

Erquickenden Gesang.

Und wüßten sie mein Wehe,
Die [goldnen]1 Sternelein,

Nur [eine]3 kennt meinen Schmerz;
[Sie]4 hat ja selbst zerrissen,
Zerrissen mir das Herz.

8.
Et si les petites fleurs savaient
Combien mon cœur fut blessé,
Elles pleureraient avec moi
Pour apaiser ma douleur.

Et si les rossignols savaient
Combien je suis triste et malade,
Ils laisseraient gaiement retentir
Un chant réconfortant.

Et si ma douleur était connue
Des petites étoiles d'or,
Elles viendraient du firmament
Et me diraient des mots réconfortants.

Tous ceux-là ne peuvent pas savoir,
[Une seule ]1 connaît ma douleur ;

À laquelle se joignent les trompettes ;
Dans la ronde des noces danse
La bien-aimée de mon cœur.

Charivari où tintent et résonnent
Timbales et chalumeaux ;
Parmi eux sanglotent et geignent
Les bons petits anges.

Quand j'entends cette chansonnette
Qu'autrefois chantait ma bien-aimée,
Alors mon cœur vole en éclats
Sous la pression d'une violente douleur.

Une noire mélancolie me pousse
À monter au sommet de la forêt,
Où éclate en sanglots
Mon trop grand mal.

Un jeune homme aime une jeune fille
Qui en a choisi un autre ;

Qui a croisé son chemin ;
Le jeune homme en est malade.

C'est une vieille histoire,
Mais toujours renouvelée ;
Et quand elle vient juste d'arriver,
Elle brise le cœur en deux.

Ne sois pas méchant avec notre sœur,
Toi qui es blême et triste.

Chaque nuit je te vois en rêve,
Et je te vois aimablement me saluer,
Et le visage baigné de larmes
Je me jette à tes pieds.

Tu me regardes avec mélancolie
Et secoues ta petite tête blonde ;

15. Aus alten Märchen winkt es [sung text checked 1 time]
Aus alten Märchen winkt es
Hervor mit weißer Hand,
Da singt es und da klingt es
Von einem Zauberland;

Wo bunte Blumen blühen
Im gold'nen Abendlicht,
Und lieblich duftend glühen,
Mit bräutlichem Gesicht;

Und grüne Bäume singen
Uralte Melodei'n,
Die Lüfte heimlich klingen,
Und Vögel schmettern drein;

Und Nebelbilder steigen
Wohl aus der Erd' hervor,
Und tanzen luft'gen Reigen
Im wunderlichen Chor;

Und blaue Funken brennen
An jedem Blatt und Reis,
Und rote Lichter rennen
Im irren, wirren Kreis;

Und laute Quellen brechen
Aus wildem Marmorstein.
Und seltsam in den Bächen
Strahlt fort der Widerschein.

Ach, könnt' ich dorthin kommen,
Und dort mein Herz erfreu'n,
Und aller Qual entnommen,
Und frei und selig sein!

Ach! jenes Land der Wonne,
Das seh' ich oft im Traum,
Doch kommt die Morgensonne,
Zerfließt's wie eitel Schaum.

Des anciens contes, me fait signe
Une blanche main,
Des chants et des mélodies s'élèvent
D'un pays enchanté ;

Là des fleurs multicolores s'épanouissent
Dans la lumière dorée du soir,
Et resplendissent, odorantes et charmantes
Avec leur visage de fiancée ;

Et les arbres verts chantent
Des mélodies immémoriales,
Les zéphirs furtifs bruissent,
Et les oiseaux y volettent ;

Et des images nébuleuses s'élèvent,
Émergeant de la terre,
Et dansent une ronde aérienne
Sur un chœur fantasque ;

Et des étincelles bleues scintillent
Sur chaque feuille et chaque rameau,
Et des lumières rouges courent
En cercles fous et confus ;

Et des sources sonores déferlent
Jaillissant du marbre brut.
Et dans les ruisseaux persistent
D'étranges reflets.

Ah, puissé-je aller là-bas,
Et y réjouir là-bas mon cœur,
Et puiser à toutes les sources,
Et être libre et bienheureux !

Ah, ce pays du bonheur
Je le vois souvent en rêve,
Mais le soleil du matin,
Le dissipe comme une vaine écume.

16. Die alten, bösen Lieder [sung text checked 1 time]
Die alten, bösen Lieder,
Die Träume [schlimm]1 und arg,
Die laßt uns jetzt begraben,
Holt einen großen Sarg.

Hinein leg' ich gar manches,
Doch sag' ich noch nicht was;
Der Sarg muß sein noch größer,
Wie's Heidelberger Faß.

Und holt eine Totenbahre,
[Von Brettern]2 [fest und dick]3;
Auch muß sie sein noch länger,
Als wie zu Mainz die Brück'.

Und holt mir auch zwölf Riesen,
Die müssen noch stärker sein
Als wie der [heil'ge]4 Christoph
Im Dom zu Köln am Rhein.

Die sollen den Sarg forttragen,
Und senken ins Meer hinab,
Denn solchem großen Sarge
Gebührt ein großes Grab.

Wißt ihr, warum der Sarg wohl
So groß und schwer mag sein?
Ich [legt']5 auch meine Liebe
Und meinen Schmerz hinein.

16.
Les vieilles, les méchantes chansons,
Les mauvais et affreux rêves
Ensevelissons-les maintenant,
Allez me chercher un grand cercueil.

J'y déposerai beaucoup de chose,
Mais je ne dis pas quoi encore ;
Le cercueil devra être encore plus grand
Qu'un tonneau de Heidelberg ;

Et apportez une civière
[De]1 bonnes planches solides et épaisses ;

Et le jeter dans la mer ;
Car à tel grand cercueil
Convient une grande tombe.

Savez-vous bien pourquoi ce cercueil
Doit être si grand et si lourd ?
J'y ai [mis]3 mon amour
Et aussi mes douleurs.
