Dir wird so wohl in ihrer Nähe, als gingst du durch ein Saatgefilde, durch das der Hauch des Abends wehe, voll frommen Friedens und voll Milde.

Je les appelle bleuets, ces délicates silhouettes aux yeux bleus qui, discrètement et par la force de leur silence, font partager à ceux qui les côtoient la rosée de paix, émanation de leurs âmes pures, inconscientes qu'elles sont des trésors de tendresse qu'elles ont reçus de la main des dieux. Quel bien-être près d'elles, comme dans le blé en herbe que caresse le souffle du soir chargé de douceur et de paix !

Mohnblumen sind die runden, rotblutigen gesunden, die sommersproßgebraunten, die immer froh gelaunten, kreuzbraven, kreuzfidelen, tanznimmermüden Seelen; die unter'm Lachen weinen und nur geboren scheinen, die Kornblumen zu necken, und dennoch oft verstecken die weichsten, besten Herzen, im Schlinggewächs von Scherzen; die man, weiß Gott, mit Küssen ersticken würde müssen, wär' man nicht immer bange, umarmest du die Range, sie springt ein voller Brander aufflammend auseinander.

Les coquelicots, ce sont les saines rondelettes au teint vermillon avec des tâches de rousseur, d'humeur toujours joyeuse, gentilles, gaies comme des pinsons, jamais lasses à la danse ; elles peuvent rire à en pleurer et semblent n'être nées que pour faire la nique aux bleuets, mais elles dissimulent bien souvent le cœur le plus tendre, le meilleur dans les entrelacs de leurs facéties, elles qu'on aimerait, Seigneur ! étouffer de baisers si on n'avait pas tout le temps peur, en étreignant la mâtine, qu'elle n'explose et se mue en brandons enflammés !

Aber Epheu nenn' ich jene Mädchen mit den sanften Worten, mit dem Haar, dem schlichten, hellen um den leis' gewölbten Brau'n, mit den braunen seelenvollen Rehenaugen, die in Tränen steh'n so oft, in ihren Tränen gerade sind unwiderstehlich; ohne Kraft und Selbstgefühl, schmucklos mit verborg'ner Blüte, doch mit unerschöpflich tiefer treuer inniger Empfindung können sie mit eigner Triebkraft nie sich heben aus den Wurzeln, sind geboren, sich zu ranken liebend um ein ander Leben: an der ersten Lieb'umrankung hängt ihr ganzes Lebensschicksal, denn sie zählen zu den seltnen Blumen, die nur einmal blühen.

Sans énergie ni prétention, sans parure autre que leur secrète floraison mais, avec leur sensibilité inépuisable et leur insondable fidélité, elles ne peuvent jamais s'arracher à leurs racines par leurs seules forces ; elles sont nées pour s'enlacer par amour à une autre vie : à l'enlacement de leur premier amour leur destinée tout entière est accrochée, car elles sont de ces fleurs rares qui ne fleurissent qu'une seule fois.

Kennst du die Blume, die märchenhafte, sagengefeierte Wasserrose? Sie wiegt auf ätherischem, schlankem Schafte das durchsicht'ge Haupt, das farbenlose, sie blüht auf schilfigem Teich im Haine, gehütet vom Schwan, der umkreiset sie einsam, sie erschließt sich nur dem Mondenscheine, mit dem ihr der silberne Schimmer gemeinsam: so blüht sie, die zaub'rische Schwester der Sterne, umschwärmt von der träumerisch dunklen Phaläne, die am Rande des Teichs sich sehnet von ferne, und sie nimmer erreicht, wie sehr sie sich sehne. Wasserrose, so nenn' ich die schlanke, nachtlock'ge Maid, alabastern von Wangen, in dem Auge der ahnende tiefe Gedanke, als sei sie ein Geist und auf Erden gefangen. Wenn sie spricht, ist's wie silbernes Wogenrauschen, wenn sie schweigt, ist's die ahnende Stille der Mondnacht; sie scheint mit den Sternen Blicke zu tauschen, deren Sprache die gleiche Natur sie gewohnt macht; du kannst nie ermüden, in's Aug' ihr zu schau'n, das die seidne, lange Wimper umsäumt hat, und du glaubst, wie bezaubert von seligem Grau'n, was je die Romantik von Elfen geträumt hat.

La connais-tu, la fleur de légende, le nymphéa mythique ? Sur sa mince tige immatérielle, elle balance sa corolle diaphane et blafarde ; elle fleurit sur l'étang au milieu des roseaux, protégée par un cygne solitaire qui fait sa ronde autour ; elle ne s'ouvre qu'à la clarté de la lune et, comme elle, répand une brillance d'argent : ainsi fleurit-elle, sœur enchantée des étoiles. La sombre noctuelle volette en rêve autour d'elle et, au bord de l'étang, la désire de loin sans jamais pouvoir satisfaire cet ardent fantasme. Nymphéa, c'est ainsi que j'appelle la mince fille aux boucles de nuit, au visage d'albâtre, aux yeux remplis d'insondables presciences tel un esprit captif sur terre. Qu'elle parle, c'est comme le murmure des flots argentins, qu'elle se taise, le silence chargé de clair de lune. On dirait qu'elle échange des clins d'yeux avec les étoiles, dont le langage familier lui est naturel ; on ne peut se lasser de plonger dans ses yeux ourlés de longs cils soyeux, et l'on se prend à croire, saisi d'une sainte frayeur, aux rêves de sylphes des Romantiques.
