Rauschendes Bächlein,
So silbern und hell,
Eilst zur Geliebten
So munter und schnell?

Die sie so lieblich
Am Busen trägt,

In purpurner Gluth,
Bächlein, erquicke

Ρυάκι που κελαρύζει, 
Τόσο ασημένιο και φωτεινό, 
Τρέχεις προς την αγαπημένη
Τόσο χαρούμενο και γρήγορο;
Αχ, καλό ρυάκι, 
Ο αγγελιοφόρος μου να είσαι εσύ•
Πήγαινε τους χαιρετισμούς
Αυτού που είναι μακριά σε εκείνην. 

Όλα τα λουλούδια της, 
Στον κήπο φροντισμένα, 
Που με τόση αγάπη
Στο στήθος τα φοράει, 
Και τα τριαντάφυλλά της 
Στην πορφυρή τους φλόγα, 
Ρυάκι, αναζωογόνησέ τα
Με δροσερό κύμα. 

Όταν αυτή στην όχθη, 
Σε όνειρα βυθισμένη, 
Εμένα σκεπτόμενη
Το κεφαλάκι σκύβει, 
Παρηγόρησέ την τη γλυκιά

Σε βαθιά ησυχία απλώνεται τριγύρω μου
Των συμπολεμιστών ο κύκλος•
Μου είναι η καρδιά τόσο ανήσυχη και βαριά, 
Από νοσταλγία τόσο θερμή. 

Πόσο συχνά έχω ονειρευτεί τόσο γλυκά
Επάνω στο ζεστό της στήθος!
Πόσο φιλική μου φαινόταν η χόβολη της εστίας, 
Όταν εκείνη ήταν μέσα στην αγκαλιά μου! 

Εδώ, όπου της φλόγας η σκοτεινή λάμψη
Αχ! μόνο πάνω στα όπλα τρεμοπαίζει,
Εδώ η καρδιά νιώθει τελείως μόνη, 
Της μελαγχολίας το δάκρυ αναβλύζει. 

Καρδιά! Μακάρι η παρηγοριά να μη σε εγκαταλείψει!
Σε καλούν ακόμη πολλές μάχες. 
Σύντομα θα έχω ησυχάσει καλά και θα κοιμάμαι βαθιά,

Wie labt mich Dein selig begrüßendes Bild!
Es lächelt am tiefblauen Himmel so mild,

Auch ich bin mir schwellender Triebe bewußt!
Wer stillet mir endlich die drängende Lust?

Θροΐζοντες άνεμοι που πνέετε τόσο απαλά
Με λουλουδιών αρώματα είναι η ανάσα σας γεμάτη!
Πώς με φυσάτε απολαυστικά χαιρετώντας με! 
Τι έχετε κάνει στην παλλόμενη καρδιά;
Θέλει να σας ακολουθήσει στην αέρινη τροχιά! 
Προς τα πού;

Ρυάκια, που κελαρύζουν μαζί τόσο εύθυμα, 
Θέλουν να ρίξουν ασήμι στην κοιλάδα. 
Το ορμητικό κύμα, σπεύδει πέρα κατά εκεί!
Βαθιά καθρεφτίζονται μέσα του λιβάδια και ουρανοί. 
Τι με τραβάς, σκέψη που λαχταρώντας ποθείς,  
Προς τα κάτω;

Παιχνιδιάρικο χρυσάφι του ήλιου που χαιρετά, 
Ελπιδοφόρα χαρά φέρνεις τρυφερά!
Πώς με ευφραίνει η εικόνα σου που μακάρια με χαιρετά! 
Χαμογελά στον βαθιά γαλάζιο ουρανό τόσο απαλά 
Και έχει τα μάτια μου με δάκρυα γεμίσει!
Γιατί;

Πράσινο στεφανώνει δάση και κορυφές!
Φωτεινοί λάμπουν οι χιονανθοί! 
Έτσι σπεύδουν όλα προς το νυφικό φως•
Φουσκώνουν οι σπόροι, το μπουμπούκι ξεπετάγεται•
Έχουν βρει, τι τους λείπει:
Κι εσύ;

Ασίγαστη νοσταλγία! Καρδιά που ποθείς, 
Πάντα μόνο δάκρυα, θρήνος και πόνος;
Κι εγώ γνωρίζω τους πόθους που φουντώνουν!
Ποιος επιτέλους θα ικανοποιήσει την επιτακτική επιθυμία;
Μόνον εσύ ελευθερώνεις την άνοιξη στην καρδιά, 
Μόνον εσύ!

Απαλά ικετεύουν τα τραγούδια μου
Μέσα στη νύχτα εσένα•
Στο ήσυχο άλσος κάτω, 
Αγαπούλα, έλα σε μένα!

Ψιθυρίζοντας θροΐζουν λεπτές κορυφές
Στο φως του φεγγαριού•
Του προδότη το εχθρικό κρυφάκουσμα

Ακούς τα αηδόνια που κελαηδούν;

Στον μακρινό ορίζοντα
Ξεπροβάλλει, σαν μία ομιχλώδης εικόνα, 
Η πόλη με τους πύργους της,
Τυλιγμένη στο φως του δειλινού. 

Ένα υγρό ρεύμα αέρα αναταράζει 
Την γκρίζα τροχιά του νερού•
Με θλιμμένο ρυθμό κωπηλατεί 
Ο ναύτης μέσα στη βάρκα μου. 

Ο ήλιος ανατέλλει ακόμη μια φορά
Λαμπερός από τη γη 
Και μου δείχνει εκείνο το μέρος, 
Όπου έχασα ό,τι πιο αγαπημένο είχα.

Im letzten Abendscheine;
Wir saßen am einsamen Fischerhaus,
Wir saßen stumm und alleine.

Der Nebel stieg, das Wasser schwoll,
Die Möve flog hin und wieder;
Aus deinen Augen, liebevoll,
Fielen die Thränen nieder.

Ich sah sie fallen auf deine Hand,
Und bin auf's Knie gesunken;
Ich hab' von deiner weißen Hand
Die Thränen fortgetrunken.

Seit jener Stunde verzehrt sich mein Leib,
Die Seele stirbt vor Sehnen; -
Mich hat das unglückseel'ge Weib
Vergiftet mit ihren Thränen.

Η θάλασσα έλαμπε μέχρι πέρα μακριά
Στο τελευταίο φως του δειλινού•
Καθόμασταν σε ένα μοναχικό ψαροκάλυβο, 
Καθόμασταν σιωπηλοί και μόνοι. 

Η ομίχλη έπεσε, η θάλασσα φούσκωσε, 
Ο γλάρος πετούσε κάποιες φορές•
Από τα μάτια σου τρυφερά
Κυλούσαν τα δάκρυα. 

Τα είδα να πέφτουν επάνω στο χέρι σου,
Και έπεσα στα γόνατα•
Από το λευκό σου χέρι
Ήπια όλα τα δάκρυα. 

Από εκείνη την ώρα λιώνει το σώμα μου, 
Η ψυχή πεθαίνει από λαχτάρα•
Η άτυχη γυναίκα με έχει
Φαρμακώσει με τα δάκρυά της.

In [diesem]2 Hause wohnte mein Schatz;
Sie hat schon [längst]3 die Stadt verlassen,

Du [Doppeltgänger]5! du bleicher Geselle!
Was äffst du nach mein Liebesleid,
Das mich gequält auf dieser Stelle,
So manche Nacht, in alter Zeit?

Ήσυχη είναι η νύχτα, ησυχάζουν τα σοκάκια, 
Σ' αυτό το σπίτι ζούσε ο θησαυρός μου•
Έχει αφήσει εδώ και πολύ καιρό την πόλη, 
Αλλά το σπίτι ακόμα στέκεται στο ίδιο μέρος. 

Εκεί στέκεται κι ένας άνθρωπος και κοιτάζει ψηλά
Και σφίγγει τα χέρια από τον δυνατό πόνο•
Μου προκαλεί φρίκη όταν κοιτάζω το πρόσωπό του -
Το φεγγάρι μου δείχνει την ίδια μου την μορφή. 

Εσύ σωσία, εσύ ωχρέ σύντροφε!
Τι μιμείσαι σαν πίθηκος τον πόνο της αγάπης μου, 
Που με βασάνισε εδώ
Τόσες νύχτες, τον παλιό καιρό;
