Sonst spielt' ich mit Zepter, mit Krone und Stern;
Das Schwert schon als Kind, ach, ich schwang es so gern!
Gespielen und Diener bedrohte mein Blick;
Froh kehrt' ich zum Schosse des Vaters zurück.
Und liebkosend sprach er: Lieb Knabe, bist mein!
O selig, o selig, ein Kind noch zu sein!

Nun schmückt mich die Krone, nun trag ich den Stern,
Das Volk, meine Russen, beglückt` ich so gern.
Ich führ sie zur Grösse, ich führ sie zum Licht,
Mein väterlich Streben erkennen sie nicht.
Umhüllet von Purpur nun steh ich allein -
O selig, o selig, ein Kind noch zu sein!

Und endet dies Streben und endet die Pein,
So setzt man dem Kaiser ein Denkmal von Stein.
Ein Denkmal im Herzen erwirbt er sich kaum,
Denn irdische Grösse erlischt wie im Traum.
Doch rufst du, Allgüt'ger: "In Frieden geh ein!"
So werd ich beseligt dein Kind wieder sein.

Allora giocavo con lo scettro, con la corona e la stella;
la spada, già da bambino, come mi piaceva brandirla!
I compagni e i servitori, li atterrivo con lo sguardo;
lieto tornavo in braccio a mio padre.
E accarezzandomi, lui diceva: Caro ragazzo mio!
Magari, magari tornare bambino!
Ora mi adorna la corona, ora tengo lo scettro,
e il popolo, i miei russi, mi piace renderli felici.
Li guido verso la grandezza, li guido verso la luce,
l'oppressione dei miei padri, non la conoscono.
Ammantato di porpora ora io sono solo -
Magari, magari tornare bambino!
E finisce l'oppressione, finisce il dolore,
e costruiscono all'imperatore un monumento di pietra.
Un onumento nei cuori, non l'ha meritato,
perché la grandezza terrena svanì come un sogno.
Ma tu dici, Dio di bontà: "Vattene in pace!"
Con la tua benedizione tornerò il tuo bambino!
