1. Im wunderschönen Monat Mai [sung text checked 1 time]
Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,
Als alle Knospen sprangen, 1
Da ist in meinem Herzen
Die Liebe aufgegangen.

Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,

Da hab' ich ihr gestanden

1. Hoe onwaarschijnlijk mooi is mei
 Hoe onwaarschijnlijk mooi is mei
 Als alle vogels zingen
 Seringen openspringen
 En meisjes staan te dringen.

 Hoe onwaarschijnlijk mooi is mei
 Tenzij je lievelingen
Op één na staan te springen
Een die zich niet laat dwingen.

2. Aus meinen Tränen spriessen [sung text not yet checked]
Aus meinen Tränen sprießen
Viel blühende Blumen hervor,
Und meine Seufzer werden
Ein Nachtigallenchor.

Und wenn du mich lieb hast, Kindchen,
Schenk' ich dir die Blumen all',
Und vor deinem Fenster soll klingen
Das Lied der Nachtigall.

2. Als dichters 's nachtjes wenen
 `Als dichters 's nachtjes wenen
Dan zijn ze gewoon aan het werk
Elk lied komt uit hun tenen
 Een traan als watermerk.

Kindchen, En als je als dichter droogstaat
Zoek je naar de bron van pijn
Naar de lente die nooit voorbijgaat
 Wil jij mijn muze zijn?'

3. De bloempjes de bijtjes, de kalfjes in weitjes
De bloempjes de bijtjes, de kalfjes in weitjes
In mei ben je blij met de rijmelrijtjes
Maar rijmt het privé, is mijn versie twee
Want het blijft bij gevlei en een schijnvrijparttijtje
Ik wijs op lammetjes en geitjes
Ik zei: ben je bij met de bloempjes en bijtjes
Het lijkt je een eitje, een hand op haar dijtje?
Kijk uit, want ze mijdt je een tijdje.

4. Wenn ich in deine Augen seh' [sung text not yet checked]
Wenn ich in deine Augen seh',
So schwindet [all' mein Leid]1 und Weh;
Doch wenn ich küße deinen Mund,
So werd' ich ganz und gar gesund.

Wenn ich mich lehn' an deine Brust,
Kommt's über mich wie Himmelslust;
Doch wenn du sprichst: ich liebe dich!
[So]2 muß ich weinen bitterlich.

4. Als ik je lieve ogen zie
Als ik je lieve ogen zie
Hoor ik op slag een symfonie
 En als je mondje opengaat
 Heb ik een aria paraat.

Steeds als ik 's avonds nog wat blijf
Is 't net of ik ons lijflied schrijf
Pas als ik vraag: zeg "Ja, ik wil!"
Dan valt mijn muze pijnlijk stil.

5. Ich will meine Seele tauchen [sung text not yet checked]
Ich will meine Seele tauchen
In den Kelch der Lilie hinein;
Die Lilie soll klingend hauchen
Ein Lied von der Liebsten mein.

Das Lied soll schauern und beben
Wie der Kuß von ihrem Mund,
Den sie mir einst gegeben
In wunderbar süßer Stund'.

5. Ik dompel dit liefdesliedje
 Ik dompel dit liefdesliedje
In een bad dat vol is gegooid
 Met witte vergeetmijnietjes
Tot lied dat haar hart ontdooit
Als ik dan zing zal het klinken
Als de kus die zij me gaf
 Of zou mijn lied verdrinken
 In huilbuien achteraf?

Die Augen, die Lippen, die Wänglein,
Die gleichen der Liebsten genau.

6. In Keulen hoor ik het dond'ren
In Keulen hoor ik het dond'ren
Ze trouwt een vent van d'r werk
 Vergeten lijkt het wonder
 Vanmorgen vroeg in de kerk.

 Want daar... mijn kaars verlichtte
 Een oud katholiek schilderij
Dreef God de spot met dichters?
 Ik bracht mijn gezicht dichtbij...

Het was Maria, dat zag je
 Maar Onze Lieve Vrouw...
-die ogen, die lippen, die lippen, dat lachje-
 Ze leek vanzelfsprekend op jou.

7. Ich grolle nicht, und wenn das Herz auch bricht [sung text checked 1 time]
Ich grolle nicht, und wenn das Herz auch bricht,
Ewig verlor'nes Lieb, ich grolle nicht.
Wie du auch strahlst in Diamantenpracht,
Es fällt kein Strahl in deines Herzens Nacht.
Das weiß ich längst.

Ich grolle nicht, und wenn das Herz auch bricht,
Ich sah dich ja im [Traum]1,
Und sah die Nacht in deines Herzens [Raum]2,
Und sah die Schlang', die dir am Herzen frißt,
Ich sah, mein Lieb, wie sehr du elend bist.

7. Mij hoor je niet
Mij hoor je niet het is maar hartsverdriet
Feliciteer hem maar! Mij hoor je niet
Hoe je ook straalt op diamantenjacht
Nu hij betaalt vergaat je toverkracht
Net wat ik dacht...

Mij hoor je niet het is maar hartsverdriet
Ik snap jouw toekomstdromen
Ik snap wat jou en mij is overkomen
Ik snap heel goed dat je geweten knaagt
Zodat je mij nu als getuige vraagt!

8. Und wüßten's die Blumen, die kleinen [sung text checked 1 time]
Und wüßten's die Blumen, die kleinen,
Wie tief verwundet mein Herz,
Sie würden mit mir weinen,
Zu heilen meinen Schmerz.

Und wüßten's die Nachtigallen,
Wie ich so traurig und krank,
Sie ließen fröhlich erschallen
Erquickenden Gesang.

Und wüßten sie mein Wehe,
Die [goldnen]1 Sternelein,
Sie kämen aus ihrer Höhe,
Und sprächen Trost mir ein.

[Die]2 alle können's nicht wissen,
Nur [eine]3 kennt meinen Schmerz;
[Sie]4 hat ja selbst zerrissen,
Zerrissen mir das Herz.

8. En stel dat de bloemetjes raadden
En stel dat de bloemetjes raadden
Hoe diep mijn hart is verwond
Dan groeiden daar weer zaden
Tot rozen uit mijn mond

En stel de de vogels wisten
Hoe diepgezonken ik ben
Ze floten: `Laat je niet kisten
En grijp weer naar de pen!'

En zagen maan en sterren
Dat inktzwarte hart van mij
Verscheen zelfs de zon van verre
En lichtte mij wat bij

Dus blijf ik ondergedoken
Maar eentje kent mijn verdriet
Die heeft dat hart gebroken
En lijmen kan ze niet.

Het lied van jou en mij

 Val thuis aan tafel neer
En draai om bij te janken
 Weer telkens "Telkens Weer'.

 Wil Jantje graag met Pietje
 Wil Pietje helaas liever Klaas
Wil Klaas het graagst met Marietje

 Mijn muze laat mij lopen

Aan wie ze zich kan verkopen
En nu is ze boven Jan...

Versteld zal ze staan van mijn liedjes
 Maar sneu voor mij privé
 Waarom telt in de liefde
Nooit een plus een is twee!

`Wees toch niet boos op ons zusje,
Jouw roos kon hier niets aan doen!'

Ik droomde dat je dood was
Ik huilde doodsbang in mijn slaap.
Ik lag voor aap, het bleef stromen
Zelfs toen ik allang was ontwaakt.

Ik droomde dat je weg was
 Mijn hoofdkussen bleek doorweekt
 Tranen om jou bleven komen
Zo erg was ik van streek.

Ik droomde dat je terug was
 We zongen een liefdesduet
Wie redt nu ik weer rechtop zit
 Mij uit dit waterbed?

14. Waar ben ik? Een kelder. Daar brandt licht!
Waar ben ik? Een kelder. Daar brandt licht!
En voetje voor voetje... `k schrik m'n hoedje!
Want hier is plotseling die gier
En bijt me toe: `Wat moet je!'

 Ik schiet hem morsdood: `Weesgegroetje!'
Nu kom ik bij jou, mijn god, wat bloed je
Ik ruk de ketting los en pluk
 De tranen van je snoetje.

Je geeft me, als dank, je Toverring
Daar zing ik het lied, op jouw lijf geschreven
Dan is het dag, waar de ring is... Ach...
En 't lied ben ik vergeten.

15. Aus alten Märchen winkt es [sung text checked 1 time]
Aus alten Märchen winkt es
Hervor mit weißer Hand,
Da singt es und da klingt es
Von einem Zauberland;

Wo bunte Blumen blühen
Im gold'nen Abendlicht,
Und lieblich duftend glühen,
Mit bräutlichem Gesicht;

Und grüne Bäume singen
Uralte Melodei'n,
Die Lüfte heimlich klingen,
Und Vögel schmettern drein;

Und Nebelbilder steigen
Wohl aus der Erd' hervor,
Und tanzen luft'gen Reigen
Im wunderlichen Chor;

Und blaue Funken brennen
An jedem Blatt und Reis,
Und rote Lichter rennen
Im irren, wirren Kreis;

Und laute Quellen brechen
Aus wildem Marmorstein.
Und seltsam in den Bächen
Strahlt fort der Widerschein.

Ach, könnt' ich dorthin kommen,
Und dort mein Herz erfreu'n,
Und aller Qual entnommen,
Und frei und selig sein!

Ach! jenes Land der Wonne,
Das seh' ich oft im Traum,
Doch kommt die Morgensonne,
Zerfließt's wie eitel Schaum.

15. Uit vieze filmpjes weet je
 Uit vieze filmpjes weet je
 Geluksland is dichtbij
 Vergeten door poëten
 Want daar maakt liefde blij;

 Waar prinsen en prinsesjes
 Zich vlijen aan je zij
 Die krijgen liefdeslesjes
 Zij bloempjes, jij de bij

 Die liggen met hun kontjes
 De hele dag omhoog
 En al die natte mondjes
 We houden het niet droog

 En zware lichtmatrozen
 Die houden trouw de wacht
 Terwijl wij minnekozen
 De hele lange nacht

 En hebben ze verdrietjes
 Zing je ze teder toe
 Met lieve liefdesliedjes
Vol `me and I love you'

En als je `ns wil slapen
 Dan kruipen ze erbij
 Een apenrots vol schapen
 Een tienerboerderij

Ach, kon ik zo maar leven
 Dan had de liefde zin
't Is moeilijk toe te geven
k Geloof er niet meer in

 Een nachtzoen van mijn kussen
 Een vaste hand in bed
 Geluksland wenkt ondertussen
Nee, 's nachts heb ik zo'n pret
 Da'k nooit mijn wekker zet.

16. Die alten, bösen Lieder [sung text checked 1 time]
Die alten, bösen Lieder,
Die Träume [schlimm]1 und arg,
Die laßt uns jetzt begraben,
Holt einen großen Sarg.

Hinein leg' ich gar manches,
Doch sag' ich noch nicht was;
Der Sarg muß sein noch größer,
Wie's Heidelberger Faß.

Und holt eine Totenbahre,
[Von Brettern]2 [fest und dick]3;
Auch muß sie sein noch länger,
Als wie zu Mainz die Brück'.

Und holt mir auch zwölf Riesen,
Die müssen noch stärker sein
Als wie der [heil'ge]4 Christoph
Im Dom zu Köln am Rhein.

Die sollen den Sarg forttragen,
Und senken ins Meer hinab,
Denn solchem großen Sarge
Gebührt ein großes Grab.

Wißt ihr, warum der Sarg wohl
So groß und schwer mag sein?
Ich [legt']5 auch meine Liebe
Und meinen Schmerz hinein.

16. Genoeg, genoeg gezongen
 Genoeg, genoeg gezongen
 Genoeg, genoeg verwoord
 Wie drooM omdraait tot leven
 Krijgt levenslang voor Moord.

 Geluksland moet begraven
 Dus haal een grote kist
Die kist wordt drie keer groter
 Dan monsters in de mist

En als we de baar gaan maken
 De inhoud, dat komt zo,
Dan wordt ie drie keer langer
 Dan katers van Bordeaux

 En zorg voor twintig reuzen
Zo hoog als de Keulse Dom
 Zo dapper als de Geuzen
 Elke voetpas is een bom...

Die zullen de kist dan dragen
 Tot diep in de oceaan
 Want enkel zo'n begraafplaats
 Kan onze tombe aan

Weet je waarom die kist nou
Zo groot en zwaar moet zijn?
Want mee gaan ook mijn liefde
 Mijn tranen, trouw en pijn.
