O frischer Morgen, frischer Mut, Wie will ich euer gedenken! Wer weiß, wird mir ein solches Gut Der Himmel nochmals schenken: Daheim die Meinen treu und lieb, In mir der rege Lebenstrieb, Und über mir die Sterne. Der Morgen löscht sich langsam aus, Er wirft mit Wind die Bäume; Ich tret' aus dunklem Jägerhaus, Verprustend die kurzen Träume. Es saugt der Mund die frische Luft, Die Brust schlingt herben Waldesduft, Es hofft das Herz, was weiß ich! Da gehn die großen Pläne auf In des Morgens düstrer Frische, Da wirft man Taten und Welten zu Hauf, Fährt grade und quer wie die Fische; Und wenn besorgt der Jäger fragt: Sie sind wohl schlimm und mißbehagt? Ach nein, ich bin nur munter! Und klarer, freier wird der Drang, Je mehr der Tag sich lichtet, Der Wintervogel versucht Gesang, 'S ist Alles so wohl gerichtet. Herr Gott, in Deinem großen Haus, Wie schwer mag's sein, wie leicht sieht's aus, Hab' Dank für Jagd und Atmen!

O frisse morgen, frisse moed, Hoe zal 'k aan jullie terugdenken! Wie weet, zal mij een derg'lijk goed De hemel nogmaals schenken: Ginds thuis de mijnen trouw en lief, In mij de levensdrift, zo vief, En boven mij de sterren. De morgen komt traag uit zijn kluis, Hij schudt met wind de bomen; Ik treed uit 't donk're jagershuis, Wegblazend de korte dromen. Ik zuig mij vol met frisse lucht En scherpe geur die 't bos uitzucht, Mijn hart, het hoopt, wat weet 'k niet! 'k Maak grote plannen ook meteen, In 't morgengrauw, het frisse; Men gooit dan daden en dromen bijeen, Flitst vlug heen en weer als de vissen; En als bezorgd de jager vraagt: Er is iets ergs dat je mishaagt? Ach nee, ik ben heel monter! En klaarder, vrijer wordt de drang, Hoe meer de dag gaat gloren, De wintervogel zet in zijn zang, 't Is alles zo naar behoren.
