Die Erde bebt und klagt und stöhnt, und hochauf braust das Meer. Der Sturmwind jagt in wilder Hast die Wolken vor sich her. So weit der Himmel ausgespannt, nicht eines Sternleins Schein; einsamen Wegs ein Wand'rer zieht in Sturm und Nacht allein. In Sturm und Nacht, in scheuer Angst kömmt er vor deine Tür; o hab Erbarmen mit dem Mann und weis' ihn nicht von dir! Ich bin der Wanderer, es liegt das Leben schwer auf mir; in Sturm und Nacht so ganz allein, o nimm mich auf bei dir!

La terre bruit et tremble et bout, et haut mugit la mer, et les nuages vont fouetés par l'ouragan dans l'air. Pas une étoile n'apparait au ciel tant qu'il s'étend ; un pauvre voyageur va seul tempête et nuit bravant. Tempête et nuit, angoisse et peur l'amènent à ton toit ; Oh ! prends pitié d'un malheureux, qui cherche abri chez toi ! Je suis ce voyageur. Le sort fut bien pesant pour moi. Tempête et nuit ne trouvent seul, acceuille-moi chez toi !
