Stenen voegt hier kunst niet tot gebouwen, Tenten spant de arme Scyth hier zich; Tussen harde rotsen, ruige wouden Is het leven eenzaam, akelig! 'En hier moet', zo luidt, ja, toch 't orakel Voor de smekeling, naar redding op zoek, 'Eens Diana's hogepriesteresse Delgen mijn en ook der vaad'ren vloek.'

Translator's note: Omdat Orestes zijn moeder Clytaemnestra gedood had -- om haar moord op zijn vader Agamemnon te wreken -- werd hij achtervolgd door de Wraakgodinnen (symbool voor gewetenskwellingen); in het Orakel van Delphi, waarheen hij gevlucht was, kreeg hij te horen dat hij op het eiland Tauris door de godin Diana van zijn misdaad gezuiverd zou worden. Zie in verband hiermee het lied 'Orestes gezuiverd' (Der entsühnte Orest', D. 699)
